What Does a Kerala Family Tour Cost?

Family pricing should reflect the actual number and ages of the people travelling rather than hiding children inside an average per-person figure. The table below uses separate adult and child starting rates, and publishes the rate we calculate from, so you can check the arithmetic yourself.

How these figures are calculated:
  • Adult starting rate is ₹2,500 per person per day — so ₹14,999 for 6 days, ₹19,999 for 8 days and ₹29,999 for 12 days.
  • Children aged 5–11 sharing the parents' room and existing bedding are charged at approximately 50% of the adult rate for the same duration.
  • Children under 5 sharing the parents' room and bedding carry no package charge.
  • Children aged 12 and above are priced as adults.

Swipe the table sideways to see all three durations.

Who Is Travelling 6 Days 8 Days 12 Days
2 Adults + 1 Child under 5 Child shares parents' room and bedding From ₹29,998 Child travels free From ₹39,998 Child travels free From ₹59,998 Child travels free
2 Adults + 1 Child aged 5–11 2 adult rates + 1 child rate From ₹37,498 From ₹49,998 From ₹74,998
2 Adults + 2 Children aged 5–11 2 adult rates + 2 child rates From ₹44,998 From ₹59,998 From ₹89,998
4 Adults + 2 Children aged 5–11 Parents, both grandparents and two children — 4 adult rates + 2 child rates From ₹74,996 From ₹99,996 From ₹1,49,996

Child Age & Pricing Policy

Under 5 Years

No separate package charge when sharing the parents' room and existing bedding. Hotel meal supplements, attraction tickets and any child-specific transport requirements are quoted separately where they apply.

5–11 Years

Charged at a reduced child rate — approximately 50% of the adult rate when sharing existing bedding. Requiring an extra bed or a separate room increases this, and we show it as its own line on your quote rather than folding it into an average.

12 Years & Above

Priced as an adult for the package and for most hotel room arrangements. Final pricing still depends on the room configuration and hotel category you choose.

Why the longer itineraries cost proportionally more: each additional day adds a hotel night, a vehicle day and driver allowance, and further sightseeing. Trips of 10 days and above usually include a second houseboat night and often a higher hotel category, so the per-day figure above is a starting point rather than a flat multiplier. Room configuration moves the total more than the route does — see our guide to family rooms, suites and connecting rooms further down this page.
International currency guide:
₹44,998 — two adults and two children for six days — is approximately £349 GBP / US$472 / €408 EUR / A$658 AUD. Indicative conversion set 31 August 2026. Exchange rates change daily. All quotations and invoices are issued in Indian rupees; your bank or card provider applies its own rate at the time of payment.

Important: These are starting-price examples, not fixed quotations. Actual family tour prices vary with travel dates, hotel category, room configuration, extra-bed requirements, houseboat category, destinations covered, seasonal supplements and included activities. Prices exclude international and domestic flights, visa fees, attraction entry tickets and travel insurance. GST is shown separately on every quote.

Choose Your Kerala Family Holiday by Your Children's Ages

The best Kerala family tour package changes considerably with the age of your children. Toddlers usually need shorter travel days and more hotel time, while older children and teenagers often enjoy wildlife, adventure activities and hands-on experiences. We recommend planning the route around your children's energy levels rather than trying to fit every Kerala attraction into one itinerary.

The best Kerala itinerary for families depends on your children's ages. Families with children under four generally benefit from short sightseeing days, nap-friendly transfers and relaxed backwater stays. Ages 5–8 usually enjoy wildlife and interactive attractions, ages 9–12 can handle more active experiences, while teenagers often prefer surfing, photography, cafés, beaches and adventure over long conventional sightseeing days.
Child's Age Best Kerala Experiences Plan Carefully Ideal Holiday Style
Under 4 Backwaters, short beach visits, hotel pools, gentle Munnar sightseeing Long drives, steep walks, packed sightseeing schedules Slow-paced 5–7 day holiday
5–8 Years Echo Point, Periyar boating, spice gardens, beaches Long museums and strenuous trekking Wildlife + nature + beach
9–12 Years Kalaripayattu, tea experiences, kayaking, Edakkal Caves Too many passive sightseeing stops Active and educational
Teenagers Surfing, Varkala, photography, adventure and free time Repetitive viewpoints and shopping-heavy itineraries Flexible, active and experience-led
0–4

Kerala With Toddlers & Children Under 4

Kerala can work very well with a baby or toddler, but the itinerary should be deliberately slower. At this age, the quality of the hotel, vehicle, meal timings and rest periods often matters more than the number of tourist attractions covered.

✓ What Works Well

  • Relaxed Alleppey or Kumarakom backwaters
  • Short Munnar viewpoints
  • Resort and swimming-pool time
  • Easy beach evenings
  • Private sightseeing with flexible stops

✕ What We Would Limit

  • Long trekking programmes
  • Steep attractions such as Edakkal Caves
  • Very early wildlife programmes
  • Multiple hotel changes on consecutive days
  • Full sightseeing from morning until evening

Driving With Toddlers

Arrange the longer road journeys around your child's usual sleep schedule where possible. A private vehicle allows feeding, toilet and rest stops without keeping to a group-tour timetable. Avoid combining a long hill transfer with a full sightseeing programme on the same day.

Are Kerala houseboats suitable for toddlers? They can be, particularly as a private family experience, but parents should check the individual boat before booking. Ask about railings, stairs, bedroom access, air-conditioning and appropriately sized life jackets, and supervise young children closely whenever they are on an open deck.
Car-seat reality: do not assume every Kerala tourist vehicle automatically carries a baby or toddler seat. Tell the tour operator the child's age, height and approximate weight before arrival and request the correct child-restraint arrangement in advance. Children should travel properly restrained rather than being carried on an adult's lap.
Good route for toddlers: Kochi → Munnar → Alleppey/Kumarakom → beach stay, with at least two nights in the destinations where possible.
5–8

Kerala Family Holidays With Children Aged 5–8

Children between five and eight usually respond best to experiences where they can see, hear, taste or discover something themselves. Instead of filling the day with monuments and viewpoints, combine one or two attractions with wildlife, nature and free time.

Echo Point, Munnar

Echo Point is an easy family stop where children can try the natural echo phenomenon while enjoying the lake and mountain scenery. It generally works better for this age group than a long scenic drive with repeated viewpoints.

Periyar Wildlife

A boat safari on Periyar Lake gives children a wildlife experience without requiring a difficult trek. Elephants, deer, gaur, wild boar, birds and other wildlife may be seen, although sightings are always natural and can never be guaranteed.

Spice Gardens

A guided spice plantation visit around Thekkady or Kumily can turn into a simple sensory activity: children can see cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger and other plants rather than only hearing about them.

Other good choices: Marari or Kovalam beach time, a private backwater cruise, hotel pool time and short nature walks. Keep some unplanned time each day rather than scheduling attraction after attraction.
9–12

Kerala Trips With Children Aged 9–12

Ages nine to twelve are ideal for making a Kerala family holiday more active. Children at this stage can usually understand the stories behind the destination and participate in experiences rather than simply being taken sightseeing.

Kalaripayattu

Watching a Kalaripayattu demonstration introduces children to Kerala's traditional martial-art culture. The athletic movements, staffs, swords, shields and other demonstrations often hold a child's attention better than another conventional cultural stop.

Munnar Tea Experience

Munnar's tea museums and factory-style demonstrations can show children how tea moves from plantation to processing and tasting. This makes the surrounding tea estates more meaningful than simply stopping beside them for photographs.

Kayaking & Backwaters

For active families, a guided kayaking or small-craft backwater experience can be more engaging than spending the entire day sitting on a larger boat. Choose a reputable operator, suitable water conditions, properly fitted life jackets and an activity appropriate to the child's ability.

Edakkal Caves with children: Edakkal in Wayanad is much more physical than a normal sightseeing stop. Reaching the rock shelter involves an uphill approach and roughly 300 steps. It can be excellent for active children interested in history and archaeology, but it is not an effortless family attraction.
Good combination for ages 9–12: wildlife + one cultural performance + one active experience + beaches/backwaters. This age group normally does not need every day to be centred around children's attractions.
13+

Kerala Holidays With Teenagers

A Kerala holiday with teenagers usually works best when they have something to participate in and some control over the day. Adventure, beaches, photography, food stops and free time can be more successful than an itinerary built entirely around traditional sightseeing.

Surfing at Kovalam

Kovalam is one of Kerala's established surfing destinations and Lighthouse Beach is used for beginner-friendly lessons. For teenagers interested in trying something new, a supervised lesson can make a beach stay much more memorable than simply spending the afternoon on the sand.

Varkala Cliff & Beach

Varkala combines a beach with dramatic cliff scenery, cafés, shops and places to spend time independently with the family nearby. It often suits teenagers who want a livelier coastal experience rather than an isolated resort day.

Photography & Content

Tea-covered Munnar hills, Kerala backwaters, Chinese fishing nets, wildlife, sunsets and coastal scenery provide plenty of photography and video opportunities. Giving teenagers time to photograph a destination can make a scenic stop more engaging.

What can bore teenagers? Not every teenager is the same, but long days containing repeated viewpoints, compulsory shopping stops, several similar temples or churches, long lectures and hours of passive road sightseeing can lose their attention. A better itinerary alternates sightseeing with something active, social or independently interesting.
Teen-friendly Kerala itinerary: Munnar scenery + Thekkady activity + Alleppey backwaters + Varkala or Kovalam beach. Add surfing, kayaking, a cultural show, photography stops or free time according to their interests.

What Is the Best Kerala Family Tour Package for Your Child's Age?

For children under four, prioritise short days, comfortable hotels and fewer transfers. For ages 5–8, combine wildlife, beaches and interactive nature experiences. Children aged 9–12 usually enjoy cultural demonstrations, kayaking and educational attractions, while teenagers benefit from adventure, surfing, photography, beach time and a more flexible schedule. A good Kerala family itinerary should therefore be designed around the children travelling—not simply around a fixed list of destinations.

Health, Food & Practical Tips for a Kerala Family Holiday

A little preparation makes a Kerala family holiday much easier with children. Drinking-water choices, meal spice levels, mosquito protection, medicines, clothing and knowing where to find medical help are all worth planning before you travel.

For a Kerala trip with children, use safe drinking water, introduce spicy food gradually, carry age-appropriate mosquito protection and keep your child's regular medicines with you. Pack sunscreen, hats, light clothing, comfortable shoes, rain protection and a small first-aid kit. Families should also note a reliable medical facility near each overnight destination before starting the trip.

Food & Drinking Water With Children in Kerala

💧

Drinking Water

When travelling with children, use factory-sealed bottled water or properly filtered water provided by a trusted hotel or restaurant. Check that the seal is intact before opening a bottle. If you are unsure about the water source, also avoid ice made from untreated water.

🌶️

Ease Into Kerala Spice Levels

Kerala food does not have to be extremely spicy, but some curries and restaurant dishes can contain more chilli than children are used to. Ask for “less spicy” or “no chilli for the child” and introduce richer dishes gradually.

🍚

Easy Foods for Children

  • Appam with mild vegetable or chicken stew
  • Idiyappam
  • Dosa or idli
  • Plain rice and dal
  • Curd rice
  • Freshly cooked fish or chicken
  • Bananas and familiar fresh fruit
🥘

Buffets & Roadside Stops

Choose food that is freshly prepared and served properly hot. Be more cautious with food that has been sitting lukewarm for long periods. With younger children, carrying familiar packaged snacks is useful during longer road transfers.

Mosquito Protection for Children

🦟

Use an Age-Appropriate Repellent

Use a recognised mosquito repellent suitable for your child's age and follow the product label. DEET- or picaridin-based products are commonly used for mosquito protection. An adult should apply repellent to younger children.

👕

Cover Up When Needed

Lightweight long trousers and long-sleeved clothing reduce exposed skin without making children excessively hot. Air-conditioned or screened accommodation can also reduce mosquito exposure.

🛏️

Babies & Toddlers

A mosquito net can be useful over a cot, stroller or sleeping area when accommodation is open to the outdoors. Only use mosquito products suitable for your child's age.

☀️

Sunscreen + Repellent

When both are required, apply sunscreen first and insect repellent afterwards. Follow the individual instructions supplied with each product.

Kerala Family Tour Driving Times & Recommended Pacing

Kerala looks compact on a map, but travelling between hill stations, wildlife areas, backwaters and beaches takes longer than many families expect. When planning a Kerala family tour package, the hours spent travelling can matter just as much as the destinations included.

A comfortable Kerala family itinerary should normally limit major transfers to one per day. Kochi to Munnar takes roughly 4–4.5 hours, Munnar to Thekkady around 3 hours, Thekkady to Alleppey around 4–4.5 hours and Alleppey to Kovalam around 4–4.5 hours. Families with young children should add comfort stops and avoid scheduling heavy sightseeing immediately after longer transfers.
Kerala Route Approx. Distance Realistic Drive Time Road Character With Young Children
Kochi → Munnar About 130 km 4–4.5 hrs More tiring
Increasingly winding hill roads as you approach Munnar.
Plan at least one proper break and leave the evening free after arrival.
Munnar → Thekkady About 90 km Around 3 hrs Moderate
Scenic plantation and hill roads with frequent bends.
Usually manageable with one short comfort stop.
Thekkady → Alleppey About 140 km 4–4.5 hrs Moderate
Descends from the highlands before becoming flatter.
Start early, especially when travelling to a fixed houseboat boarding time.
Alleppey → Kovalam About 160 km 4–4.5 hrs Generally easier
Mostly flatter than the Munnar and Thekkady sectors.
Include one or two comfort stops for younger children.

Which Kerala Driving Legs Should Families Break Up?

Kochi → Munnar: Take Your Time

This is often the first long transfer of the holiday and the final section becomes winding. With toddlers or children prone to motion sickness, stop for food, toilets and fresh air. Avoid planning a full Munnar sightseeing programme immediately after arrival.

Munnar → Thekkady: Usually Manageable

At around three hours, this is one of the easier major transfers on the standard Kerala family circuit. Families can normally include one short break and still have time for a relaxed activity after reaching Thekkady.

Thekkady → Alleppey: Leave Early

This transfer requires more careful planning because many houseboats have fixed boarding times. With younger children, build in enough time for breakfast and comfort stops rather than turning the journey into a rushed drive.

Alleppey → Kovalam: Keep the Evening Free

The road is generally easier than the hill sectors, but four hours is still a substantial travel day for children. Consider a beach or hotel-pool evening rather than immediately adding several Trivandrum attractions.

For a more detailed route-by-route comparison, see our Kerala driving distances and real journey times guide . If you are deciding whether your family needs a sedan, SUV, Innova or larger vehicle, also compare our Kerala tour vehicle options before finalising the itinerary.

OUR HONEST FAMILY TRAVEL ADVICE

Travelling With Children? Don't Book the Shortest Kerala Itinerary

A five-day Kerala tour may look cheaper and more efficient, but trying to cover Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kovalam in five days means a significant portion of the holiday is spent checking out, driving, checking in and preparing to move again the following morning. For most families, especially those travelling with younger children, that feels more like transportation with sightseeing fitted around it than a relaxing family holiday.

5-Day Family Trip Possible, but rushed

Better limited to two or three destinations. Trying to include all four major stops creates too many consecutive transfer days.

7–8 Day Family Trip Much better paced

Allows two-night stays, proper Munnar sightseeing, wildlife time, a relaxed backwater experience and genuine beach time.

What we recommend: for a first Kerala family holiday covering Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kovalam, aim for around 7–8 days. If you only have five days, remove a destination rather than compressing the same four-stop route. Children are more likely to remember the wildlife they watched, the houseboat they travelled on and the beach they played at than the number of destinations the itinerary managed to include.

Driving-time note: Travel times are approximate planning estimates for a private vehicle and can vary with traffic, weather, road works, sightseeing stops and seasonal congestion. Mountain roads around Munnar and Thekkady may also feel considerably longer than an equivalent-distance highway journey.

Kerala Family Hotel Rooms: One Room, Two Rooms or a Family Suite?

For a Kerala family tour package, a family of four cannot automatically be placed in one standard hotel room. Many room categories allow a maximum of three guests, while selected hotels offer four-person family rooms, two-bedroom suites or connecting rooms. The right arrangement depends on the children's ages, approved room occupancy, bedding and your family's need for privacy.

Important: there is no Kerala-wide rule saying every hotel room is limited to three people. The limit is set by the individual hotel and room category. Some standard rooms and suites have a maximum occupancy of three, while purpose-built family rooms can legally and comfortably accommodate four or more guests.

Why the “3 Guests Per Room” Problem Happens

Most normal double rooms are designed around one king or twin-bed setup. A hotel may allow an extra mattress for one child or adult, creating a three-person room, but adding a second extra bed may exceed the property's occupancy, fire-safety or available floor-space rules. For this reason, simply asking for “one room for four” does not guarantee that the hotel can accept the booking.

This is especially important when booking a Kerala family holiday with two children. A cheaper-looking package may initially quote one room, only for the family to discover later that a second room is compulsory. We therefore check the actual occupancy and bedding configuration before finalising the hotel.

Which Room Setup Is Best for a Family of Four?

1 Family Room

Best when the hotel has a genuine room category approved for four guests. It is usually the most economical option for parents travelling with younger children who are comfortable sharing the same space.

2 Connecting Rooms

Often the most practical choice for families with older children or teenagers. Parents and children have separate bedrooms and bathrooms while an internal connecting door keeps the family together.

Family / 2-Bedroom Suite

Ideal when you want more space without separating the family. Some Kerala resorts provide two bedrooms, a common living area or two interconnected sleeping areas inside one family unit.

Kerala Hotels With Family Rooms, Suites or Connecting Rooms

Family-room availability differs by travel date and hotel category. The examples below are properties that publicly list family rooms, interconnected rooms or multi-room suites suitable for family travel.

Destination Property Published Family Configuration Best For
Munnar Grand Valley Resort
Interconnected
Family Suite Hut with two interconnected rooms, two king beds and approximately 500 sq. ft. of space. Parents + 2 children who want two sleeping areas while remaining connected.
Munnar Parakkat Nature Hotel & Resorts
Family Suite for 4
Family Interconnected Club Suite measuring approximately 750 sq. ft., specifically designed for families or groups of four. Families wanting a premium interconnected setup with substantially more space.
Thekkady Avadale Thekkady
2-Room Family Suite
AC and non-AC family suites consisting of two rooms, each with a king-size bed, plus a shared balcony or sit-out. Families of four and parents travelling with older children.
Alleppey Olivia Alleppey
Up to 4 Guests
Lake View Twin Room and Superior Family Room are published for four guests. Connecting rooms can also be requested subject to availability. Families wanting one room instead of automatically paying for two rooms.
Kovalam The Leela Kovalam, A Raviz Hotel
Connecting Options
The resort confirms interconnecting or adjoining accommodation in selected categories, including certain suites. Premium family holidays and multi-generational trips.
Kochi Kochi Marriott Hotel
Connecting Rooms
The hotel specifically promotes connecting-room availability for travellers who want to stay together. Families with teenagers, grandparents or children needing a separate bedroom.
Kochi Holiday Inn Cochin
2-Bedroom Suite
Connecting rooms are available on request, and the hotel also lists a Two Bedroom Suite with one king bed and two single beds. Larger families and intergenerational Kerala holidays.

When Does a Family of Four Need Two Rooms?

Family Situation Usually Best Why
2 adults + 2 young children 4-guest family room Usually the best-value arrangement when the room's official occupancy allows four guests and the bedding is suitable.
2 adults + 2 older children / teenagers Connecting rooms Provides two bathrooms, more luggage space and better privacy without separating the family completely.
2 adults + 2 children wanting more comfort Family or 2-bedroom suite Gives everyone more space and can be more convenient than booking two unrelated rooms.
Parents + children + grandparents 2 or 3 rooms / connecting rooms Grandparents normally benefit from a separate room, while connecting or adjoining rooms keep the family close together.

Does Choosing Two Rooms Cost More Than Adding Another Destination?

Sometimes, yes. Room configuration can change the total cost of a Kerala family package more than travellers expect. The examples below use currently published hotel starting rates to show why we confirm the room setup before calculating the final package price.

One 4-guest family room example From ₹10,499/night Olivia Alleppey Superior Family Room — published for up to four guests.
Two separate king rooms example From ₹14,998/night Two ₹7,499 rooms would add roughly ₹4,499 per night compared with one four-guest family room.
Premium interconnected option From ₹15,000/night Grand Valley Munnar's published interconnected Family Suite Hut rate, before applicable taxes.

As a planning example, extending a Kerala road trip from six to seven days can add around ₹3,000 to an Innova vehicle package before the additional hotel night, meals and sightseeing. Once accommodation is added, another destination or overnight stay can easily add roughly ₹11,000–₹18,000+ to a family itinerary, depending on the hotel category.

Our family-room rule: we do not assume that “2 adults + 2 children” automatically fits into one room. Before confirming a Kerala family tour package, the children's ages, hotel occupancy rules, extra-bed policy and room configuration should be checked. If connecting rooms are requested, they should also be reconfirmed with the hotel because availability is limited.

Pricing note: Hotel prices shown above are examples based on publicly displayed starting rates checked in August 2026 and are not fixed package quotations. Hotel rates, taxes, extra-bed charges, connecting-room availability and seasonal supplements can change. The final room configuration and price should always be confirmed for your exact travel dates and family composition.

Kerala Family Holidays — Your Questions Answered

The questions below are the ones our trip designers in Thiruvananthapuram are asked most often by families, answered the way we would answer them on the phone. Where the honest answer is “book the longer trip” or “that will cost more than you think”, we have said so.

Is Kerala safe for families with young children?

Yes. Kerala has India’s highest literacy rate, hospitals in every major town along the tourist route, and one of the country’s longest-established tourism industries. The practical safeguard is that your driver stays with you for the entire route rather than changing between cities, so somebody who knows your itinerary is always with you.

Two location-specific things are worth knowing before you go. Varkala’s clifftop paths are largely unfenced, with a steep drop to the beach — fine for teenagers, worth holding small hands for. And at Kovalam, Lighthouse Beach is patrolled by lifeguards but the Arabian Sea can produce strong rip currents; ask the flag colour before anyone swims, and treat unpatrolled stretches as paddling only.

The genuine everyday hazard in Kerala is traffic, not crime. Pavements are inconsistent and crossings are informal, so cross with your driver rather than independently.

What is the best age to take children to Kerala?

From about five, children handle the drives, remember the elephants and genuinely enjoy the houseboat. Nine to fourteen is the ideal window — old enough for spice plantations, tea factories and a Kalaripayattu demonstration, young enough to still be delighted by all of it.

Under three travels perfectly well, but you should plan a shorter route. Two or three bases instead of five, with the Kochi–Munnar climb taken in the morning while they are fresh. Teenagers need something of their own in the itinerary: surfing lessons at Kovalam, the cafés and sunsets on the Varkala cliff, or kayaking through the backwater canals rather than only cruising them.

The age we would gently discourage is a single child under eighteen months on a two-week multi-stop route. Kerala will still be there in three years, and it is a better holiday when they can walk.

How many days do you need in Kerala with children?

Eight to ten days. The same destinations will compress into five or six, but that concentrates the driving, and with children under ten the driving ruins a Kerala holiday long before the sightseeing does. Ten days keeps every road leg under three hours and leaves two genuinely unplanned days.

As a rough guide: six days covers hills, wildlife, one houseboat night and a single beach day at a brisk pace. Eight days adds breathing room and a second beach day. Ten days is what we recommend to families flying long-haul, because the first day is lost to arrival and the last to departure whatever you plan.

See the 6-day family itinerary, the 7-day family route, or the 14-day Kerala and Tamil Nadu family tour if you want both states.

Do Kerala hotels have family rooms or connecting rooms?

Some do, but most standard Kerala hotel rooms are capped at three occupants. A family of four usually needs two rooms or a family suite — and that single decision changes your total cost more than the route you choose does.

Connecting rooms are common in the larger resorts at Kochi, Kumarakom, Marari and Kovalam, and rare almost everywhere else. Hill properties in Munnar and Thekkady are frequently standalone cottages where the only option is a rollaway bed, which suits a child of eight and does not suit a child of fifteen. Heritage homestays often have the most characterful rooms and the strictest occupancy limits.

This is why we ask your children’s ages before quoting rather than after. Vijaya Lekshmi inspects the properties we recommend, so we can tell you which specific rooms take a fourth bed and which only appear to. Every quote states the room configuration in writing before you pay anything.

Do children pay full price on a Kerala family tour package?

No. Children under five normally travel free sharing their parents’ room and existing bedding. Ages five to eleven are charged at a reduced rate where they share bedding, and a higher rate where an extra bed is required. Twelve and over are charged as adults by most Kerala hotels.

Child ageTypical basis
Under 5Free, sharing parents’ room and bedding
5–11, no extra bedReduced child rate
5–11, with extra bedHigher child rate
12 and overCharged as an adult

Two things worth doing with any operator, us included. Ask for the child line as a separate figure rather than folded into a per-person average — a headline “per person” rate almost always assumes two adults sharing and quietly leaves your children out of the comparison. And ask whether GST is inside the number or added on top, because it is the commonest reason two quotes that look identical are not. You can sketch a figure yourself with the South India trip cost calculator.

How long are the drives between destinations in Kerala?

Longer than the map suggests, because Kerala’s roads wind. Kochi to Munnar is four to four and a half hours on a climbing ghat road. Munnar to Thekkady is about three. Thekkady to Alleppey is three and a half to four, and Alleppey down to Kovalam is around four.

LegDriving timeWith children
Kochi → Munnar4–4.5 hrsBreak at Cheeyappara falls
Munnar → Thekkady~3 hrsComfortable
Thekkady → Alleppey3.5–4 hrsArrive by noon for boarding
Alleppey → Kovalam~4 hrsSplit with a Varkala night
Kochi → Alleppey~1.5 hrsEasiest leg on the route

The Kochi–Munnar climb is where car-sick children struggle, so we schedule it as a morning departure and stop at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls to break it up. If anyone in the family travels badly, tell us at enquiry — we can reverse the route and approach Munnar from Thekkady on a gentler gradient instead. Overloading the map is the first planning mistake that ruins Kerala itineraries.

Is a Kerala houseboat safe for children?

Yes, with two checks worth making before you book. Confirm the boat has railed decks and cabin doors that lock from the inside, and confirm child-size life jackets are actually aboard rather than assumed. Houseboats stop cruising at sunset and moor overnight, so the night itself is the calmest part of the trip.

The detail nobody mentions: air conditioning on most houseboats runs off a generator, and generators typically run only from around 9pm to 6am. Cabins are comfortable overnight and warm through the afternoon. If you are travelling in April or May with young children, ask specifically whether the boat has daytime AC — a small number do, and they cost more.

Families with children under six often prefer two nights aboard rather than one. It is the one case where a second night genuinely earns its place, because it saves repacking and moving hotels mid-trip. Our Kerala backwaters itinerary is built around that pattern. Kumarakom is the quieter alternative to Alleppey if you would rather have fewer boats around you.

What is there for children to actually do in Kerala?

More than the brochures suggest. The reliable hits are the early boat safari at Periyar, Echo Point above Munnar, a spice plantation walk, the houseboat itself and shallow beach days at Kovalam or Marari. Fort Kochi adds the Chinese fishing nets and a tuk-tuk tour that most children remember longer than the museums.

  • Ages 4–8: Echo Point, elephants at Periyar, Kundala Lake pedal boats, the Napier Museum grounds and zoo in Trivandrum, sandcastles at Marari.
  • Ages 9–12: a Kalaripayattu martial arts demonstration, watching Kathakali performers apply their make-up before a show, a working tea factory tour above Munnar, kayaking the narrow backwater canals.
  • Teenagers: surfing lessons at Kovalam, the Varkala clifftop, Edakkal caves in Wayanad, and enough downtime that the trip does not feel like a school outing.

Take the Periyar boat that leaves around 7am rather than a later one — it is the one where animals are actually at the water. That only works if you slept in Thekkady the night before rather than driving in that morning, which is why we build the overnight in.

What is the best time of year for a Kerala family holiday?

October to March for the weather. December and January are the driest and coolest, and also the busiest — the fortnight from 20 December to 5 January books out eight to ten weeks ahead and rates roughly double. June to August is monsoon: green, quiet and the cheapest time to travel.

One timing trap specific to families. Eravikulam National Park above Munnar, where you go to see the Nilgiri tahr, usually closes for around six to eight weeks across February and March for the calving season. Exact dates are set each year by the forest department. If the tahr matter to your children, confirm the year’s dates before fixing your route — the rest of Munnar stays open throughout, so it changes one morning rather than the trip.

Monsoon travel with children works better than people expect. The rain tends to arrive in heavy bursts rather than all day, the hills are at their most dramatic, and hotel rates are at their lowest. Pack for wet feet, expect leeches on hill walks in Munnar and Thekkady, and read our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Kerala before deciding.

Can you arrange a Kerala family holiday during school holidays?

Yes, and most of our international families travel in exactly those windows. UK Christmas and Easter, the Australian December–January summer and the Gulf spring break all fall inside Kerala’s dry season. The constraint is availability rather than weather.

  • UK Christmas fortnight: the single busiest window in Kerala. Book eight to ten weeks ahead or the hotels worth having are gone.
  • UK Easter and October half-term: the sweet spot — reliable weather, noticeably lower rates, far fewer people than Christmas.
  • Australian summer, December–January: excellent weather, peak pricing.
  • European and UK summer, July–August: full monsoon. Entirely workable and much cheaper, but book it knowingly rather than by accident.

If your dates are already fixed and close, tell us anyway. We will say honestly whether we can still secure suitable family rooms rather than quoting you whatever is left.

What will children eat in Kerala?

Whatever they normally eat, plus a few things they will like more. Every hotel we use serves plain rice, breads, eggs, fruit, chicken, chips and pasta alongside Keralan dishes, and kitchens reduce the chilli on request without needing to be asked twice.

The practical advice is to ease into spice levels across the first three days rather than on arrival day, when everyone is tired and less forgiving. Freshly cooked food is very safe; drink bottled or filtered water only, which every hotel we use provides and your car is stocked with.

The usual hits with children are appam with stew, plain dosa, parotta, fresh coconut water straight from the shell, and the small local bananas. On the houseboat the crew cooks everything aboard, including the lake fish bought that morning, and will happily prepare a plain version alongside the family meal.

What health precautions do children need for Kerala?

No vaccination is legally required to enter India from the UK, Europe, the US or Australia, though a yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country where it is present. Travel clinics routinely recommend routine boosters plus hepatitis A and typhoid. Speak to a clinic six to eight weeks before you fly.

Antimalarial tablets are not usually advised for the main Kerala tourist route, but mosquito precautions still matter — dengue is present in Kerala and there is no tablet for it. Repellent on exposed skin, long sleeves around dusk, and the room’s plug-in vaporiser used overnight covers most of it.

Hospitals in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are genuinely good, with English-speaking staff and international standards of care, and there is a hospital within reach of every stop on our routes. Take travel insurance covering every family member. Check current guidance at NHS Fit for Travel or the US CDC travel health pages, both of which are updated continuously.

Are child car seats available in Kerala?

Not reliably. Child seats are not standard equipment in Indian hire vehicles and cannot be sourced locally with any certainty. Families travelling with children under four generally bring their own lightweight seat or a travel harness, which most airlines carry free of charge in addition to the baggage allowance.

Tell us at enquiry and we will assign a vehicle with compatible rear seatbelt anchor points and have the driver confirm the fit before you leave the airport. For children over four a folding booster is usually enough and packs flat.

We would rather tell you this now than have you discover it at arrivals. It is the single most common unwelcome surprise for European and Australian families landing in India for the first time.

Which airport should we fly into with children?

Fly into Kochi (COK) and out of Trivandrum (TRV) on an open-jaw ticket. Kerala’s highlights run north to south, so a return flight from Kochi forces a five-hour backtrack up the coast on your final day with tired children. Most airlines price the open-jaw within a few pounds of a standard return.

Kochi has the widest choice of one-stop routings from the UK, Europe and Australia via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Muscat, and it sits within four hours of Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. Choose Calicut (CCJ) instead only if Wayanad is your main destination.

Almost all international visitors need an Indian e-Tourist Visa, applied for online at the official government portal at least four to seven days before you fly. Children need their own individual visa and their own application. We explain exactly what happens when you land in a separate guide.

Can grandparents travel on the same itinerary as young children?

Yes — multigenerational trips are among the most common we plan, and the itinerary changes shape rather than shortening. Driving legs capped at three hours, ground-floor or lift-access rooms, steep sites left optional, and a houseboat chosen for easy boarding rather than for the photograph.

The useful discovery is that the pacing which suits a seven-year-old usually suits a seventy-year-old. Both want shorter drives, a proper lunch stop and an afternoon that is not scheduled. Munnar’s altitude of roughly 1,600 metres is gentle and presents no altitude concern.

Sites we routinely make optional for the older generation while the children go ahead: the Edakkal caves in Wayanad, the steeper viewpoint walks around Munnar, and the Varkala cliff steps. Tell us about mobility needs at enquiry and the route is built around them rather than squeezed past them.

Still deciding? Send us your dates, your children’s ages and the one thing your family would be disappointed to miss. We will come back with a routed itinerary, room configurations stated, and a child rate shown as its own line. There is no deposit required to receive one and no obligation afterwards.
