Day 1 — Arrive in Cochin & Toddler-Friendly Stay in Fort Kochi

We meet you inside the terminal at Cochin International Airport with a name board and it is about forty minutes to Fort Kochi. Nothing else happens today.

With a toddler, arrival day is about sleep and nothing else. Most long-haul flights land in the early hours here, and the hotel is booked from the night before so your room is ready when you arrive rather than at two in the afternoon. That is not an upgrade — it is a night we pay for so you are not sitting in a lobby with a jet-lagged two-year-old.

A cot is confirmed in writing before you travel, not requested on arrival. Our Kerala packing guide covers what to bring for under-5s specifically — the short version is that nappies, formula and baby food are all readily available in Kochi, and a lightweight travel seat is not.

Day 2 — Fort Kochi Sightseeing with a Toddler

A short morning outing by tuk-tuk rather than on foot. Forty-five minutes to an hour is the realistic limit — the Chinese fishing nets, the harbour, and the streets behind them, which are quiet enough for a toddler to walk rather than be carried the whole way. Back at the hotel for lunch and a nap.

The afternoon is free. Most Fort Kochi properties we use for families have a pool, and after a long flight that is genuinely the best thing available. If everyone is up for it, the fishing nets are worth a second visit in the last hour of light — they are lifted on a counterweight system that children find far more interesting than any museum.

Day 3 — Cochin to Athirappilly with a Toddler

We leave after breakfast, around half past nine, so the drive falls across the morning nap rather than the afternoon. Two hours on mostly flat road through Chalakudy, with one stop if it is needed.

You will be at the resort well before lunch. Athirappilly sits at the edge of the Vazhachal rainforest and the properties here look straight out over the trees. The afternoon is the pool and nothing else.

Day 4 — Athirappilly Falls & Vazhachal with a Toddler

Athirappilly Falls is a short drive from the resort and is Kerala’s largest waterfall — around eighty feet across a wide rock face, and loud. There are two ways to see it: the upper viewing platform, which is a five-minute level walk from the car park and fenced, and the lower path, which is a steep fifteen-minute descent on uneven steps.

In the afternoon, a gentle guided walk in the Vazhachal forest area — flat, shaded, and about an hour. Butterflies, hornbills if you are lucky, and no climbing. Then the pool.

Day 5 — Athirappilly to Kumarakom Backwaters with a Toddler

The longest drive of the week, and the only one over two and a half hours. We start after breakfast and take it in two halves with a proper stop, so the second half falls across the nap.

Kumarakom sits on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake and is the quieter half of the Kerala backwaters — fewer boats than Alleppey, and the properties are set in gardens rather than on a strip. Ground-floor rooms are confirmed in advance. The afternoon is free.

Day 6 — Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary & Private Backwater Day Cruise

The Kumarakom bird sanctuary is best in the first hour after opening, before the heat and before anyone else. It is a flat, shaded path of about a kilometre and a pushchair will manage most of it. Between November and February the migratory birds arrive and it is genuinely worth the early start; outside those months it is a pleasant walk rather than a highlight, and we will say so.

Late morning, your private day cruise. A houseboat or a smaller covered boat, yours alone, out onto Vembanad and then into the narrow village canals where the backwaters are still somebody’s back garden rather than a view. Lunch is cooked on board. You are back at the hotel by late afternoon and your children sleep in the beds they slept in last night.

Children’s life jackets are confirmed aboard before we book, and we choose boats with railed decks. If you would rather do the canals in a village canoe than a houseboat — quieter, closer to the water, and about an hour — tell us and we will swap it.

Day 7 — Kumarakom to Cochin Airport Departure

An hour and a half to Cochin International Airport on flat road. We recommend leaving three and a half hours before an international departure.

Finishing at Kumarakom rather than on the coast is deliberate: it is the closest of the backwater bases to the airport, so the last day is a short transfer rather than a long one. If your flight leaves after midnight, as many long-haul departures from Kochi do, ask us about keeping the room until evening rather than checking out at noon with a toddler and six hours to fill.
