Arupadai Veedu Tour Package 6N 7D

Price From – ₹17,999 per person (twin sharing)

Tour Activities included

The Arupadai Veedu Tour Package 7 Days / 6 Nights covers all six abodes of Lord Murugan in a single north-to-south route. It includes Thiruthani and its 365 steps, Swamimalai and the sixty steps named for the Tamil year cycle, the hill temple at Palani with its winch train and rope car, Thiruparankundram’s rock-cut shrine outside Madurai, Pazhamudircholai in the forested Alagar hills, and Thiruchendur on the shore of the Bay of Bengal — the only one of the six built at sea level. The route runs Chennai to Madurai with an open-jaw flight, so nothing is retraced.

General Tour Description

The Arupadai Veedu — literally the six battle camps — are the six temples named in the Tirumurukāṯṟuppaṭai, a Sangam-era Tamil poem, as the principal abodes of Murugan. Each marks a different episode: where he received the spear, where he defeated Surapadman, where he married Deivanai, where he married Valli, where he taught the meaning of Om to his own father, and where he lives as a renunciate.

They are spread the length of Tamil Nadu, from Thiruthani near the Andhra border to Thiruchendur on the far southern coast. Doing all six is a recognised undertaking and a great many Tamil families do it once in their lives.

We will be straight about the driving. This route covers roughly 1,400 kilometres in seven days, and two of those days involve five to five and a half hours on the road. That is not a fault of the planning — it is the geography of the circuit, and any operator offering it in five days is either cutting temples or cutting sleep. We have ordered it north to south so nothing is retraced, and we fly you home from Madurai rather than driving you back to Chennai.

Temple timings shape every day. Most of the six close for several hours in the middle of the day, and the two hill temples have their own access arrangements. We build the route around the opening hours rather than around the map, which is most of what you are paying an operator for on a circuit like this.

This itinerary is a pilgrimage route rather than a sightseeing one. If you want Tamil Nadu’s temples as architecture and history, that is a different trip — you will find both on our Tamil Nadu tour packages page.

Arupadai Veedu Tour Package 6N 7D

Complete the sacred Arupadai Veedu journey across Tamil Nadu, visiting all six principal abodes of Lord Murugan in a carefully planned 7-day itinerary from Chennai to Madurai.

6 Nights / 7 Days 6 Murugan Temples Chennai to Madurai Tamil Nadu Temple Tour
DAY 1

Arrive Chennai – Thiruthani

Drive: About 2 hours each way · 85 km · Overnight: Chennai

We collect you at Chennai airport, railway station or hotel and drive north-west to Thiruthani, the fifth abode and the place where Murugan is said to have married Valli, the hunter’s daughter.

The temple sits on a low hill reached by 365 steps, one for each day of the year. There is also a road to the top for travellers who prefer not to use the steps.

Return to Chennai for the night. If you arrive late and the temple has already closed, the Thiruthani visit can be moved to the morning of Day 2 and the journey adjusted accordingly.

DAY 2

Chennai to Swamimalai

Drive: About 5.5 hours · 300 km · Overnight: Kumbakonam

We leave Chennai early and travel south towards Swamimalai, the fourth of the Arupadai Veedu temples.

According to tradition, Murugan taught the meaning of the syllable Om to Shiva here and is worshipped as Swaminathan, the teacher of his own father.

The temple stands on an artificial mound reached by sixty steps, representing the Tamil sixty-year cycle.

Swamimalai is also well known for its bronze-casting tradition. Depending on the available time and temple opening hours, visitors may also see local bronze foundries using the traditional lost-wax method.

DAY 3

Swamimalai to Palani

Drive: About 5.5 hours · 300 km · Overnight: Palani or Dindigul

Travel west across Tamil Nadu to Palani, the third abode of Lord Murugan.

The temple stands on a hill approximately 450 feet above the town. Murugan is worshipped here as Dandayudhapani, the renunciate holding only a staff.

There are three main ways to reach the hilltop temple: approximately 693 steps, a winch train or a rope car. Operating arrangements can change due to maintenance, so availability should be checked for the travel dates.

Palani is also famous for its panchamirtham, traditionally prepared using ingredients including banana, jaggery, ghee, honey, cardamom and dates.

DAY 4

Palani to Madurai – Thiruparankundram

Drive: About 2.5 hours · 120 km · Overnight: Madurai

After the longer journeys of the previous two days, today has a shorter drive towards Madurai.

Visit Thiruparankundram, approximately six kilometres outside Madurai. It is regarded as the first abode and is associated with Murugan’s marriage to Deivanai following his victory over Surapadman.

Much of the historic temple is cut directly into the rock face, including its sanctum, pillared halls and carved reliefs.

The afternoon is free in Madurai. Travellers who wish can also visit Meenakshi Amman Temple, allowing around two hours for the experience.

DAY 5

Pazhamudircholai – Thiruchendur

Drive: About 4.5 hours · 210 km · Overnight: Thiruchendur or Thoothukudi

Begin early with a visit to Pazhamudircholai, the sixth abode of Murugan, located around twenty kilometres north of Madurai in the Alagar Hills.

This is the smallest and most wooded of the six temples, surrounded by groves with a spring nearby.

Afterwards, continue south towards Thiruchendur, the second abode and the only Arupadai Veedu temple located at sea level.

The temple stands directly beside the Bay of Bengal and commemorates Murugan’s victory over Surapadman. Pilgrims traditionally bathe in the sea before entering the temple.

Accommodation at Thiruchendur is limited. When suitable accommodation is unavailable, the overnight stay may be arranged at Thoothukudi, approximately forty kilometres north.

DAY 6

Thiruchendur to Madurai

Drive: About 4 hours · 190 km · Overnight: Madurai

Visit Thiruchendur in the morning, ideally before the main crowds build. This visit completes all six sacred Arupadai Veedu temples.

Afterwards, drive north to Madurai for the final overnight stay.

The evening is free. Travellers who did not visit Meenakshi Amman Temple earlier in the itinerary may consider visiting the temple and its evening ceremonies.

DAY 7

Madurai – Departure

Transfer: About 30 minutes to Madurai Airport

Enjoy a relaxed morning before your transfer to Madurai airport or railway station for your onward journey.

For domestic flights, allow sufficient time before departure. Travellers who would like to continue their journey can also extend towards the southern Tamil Nadu temple circuit, Kodaikanal or Kerala.

Frequently Asked Questions – Arupadai Veedu Tour Package

1. What exactly is the Arupadai Veedu?

Arupadai Veedu refers to six temples named in the Tirumurukāṯṟuppaṭai, a Sangam-period Tamil poem, as the principal abodes of Lord Murugan.

The six are Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani and Pazhamudircholai. Each temple is associated with a different episode in Murugan tradition.

Visiting all six is a recognised pilgrimage among Tamil Hindus, and this itinerary is designed to complete the entire circuit within one journey.

2. Can the Arupadai Veedu tour be completed in fewer than seven days?

The six temples are spread across a large part of Tamil Nadu, with the complete journey covering roughly 1,400 kilometres. Several travel sectors require around five to six hours on the road.

Seven days provides a more practical schedule without forcing travellers to rush through the temples or depend on overnight driving.

3. Are non-Hindus allowed inside the Arupadai Veedu temples?

Access regulations can vary between temples and may change. Outer temple areas are generally more accessible, while restrictions may apply to certain inner areas or sanctums.

Travellers should dress modestly, keep shoulders and knees covered, remove footwear where required and follow the individual temple’s current entry rules.

4. How much climbing is involved?

Thiruthani has approximately 365 steps and also has road access towards the top.

Palani has approximately 693 steps and normally offers alternatives such as a winch train and rope car. Operating status should be checked for the specific travel dates.

The remaining temples mainly involve normal temple walking, often barefoot on stone surfaces.

5. What is the best time for an Arupadai Veedu tour?

November to February generally offers more comfortable weather for a temple circuit across Tamil Nadu.

Major festivals such as Thaipusam and Skanda Sashti can create very large crowds, longer darshan queues, hotel shortages and traffic restrictions, particularly around Palani and Thiruchendur.

6. What other destinations can be added to this tour?

Several destinations can be combined naturally with this route. These include Srivilliputhur and the Andal Temple , Courtallam and Tirunelveli and Meghamalai and the High Wavy Mountains .

7. Can this tour be combined with another temple circuit?

Yes. One possible extension is towards Tiruvannamalai and the Jawadhu Hills .

Tiruvannamalai can be incorporated between Thiruthani and Swamimalai, allowing the journey to continue with one vehicle and driver rather than treating the extension as a separate tour.

8. Where will we stay at Thiruchendur?

Thiruchendur is a relatively small pilgrimage town and its accommodation options are more limited than larger Tamil Nadu cities.

Where suitable accommodation is available, an overnight stay can be arranged in Thiruchendur. Otherwise, accommodation can be provided in Thoothukudi, approximately forty kilometres north, with an early transfer to the temple.

Our 5-day Kerala trip with Troper Tours was a lovely experience from the moment we arrived until the final day. My friend and I travelled from the UK and everything was organised smoothly, which made the journey comfortable and easy. We enjoyed the changing scenery, local food, tea hills, backwaters and the relaxed pace of the trip. One of our favourite moments was reaching Munnar, where we could enjoy the cool weather, plantations and peaceful mountain views. The vehicle was comfortable, our driver was punctual and helpful, and the team was always easy to contact whenever we needed anything. What we appreciated most was that the trip never felt rushed or overly planned. We had enough time to enjoy Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Trivandrum properly. Troper Tours took good care of us throughout the five days. A memorable Kerala holiday, and we would happily recommend them to other travellers visiting from the UK.

To Put In A Nutshell Our family road trip of Tamil Nadu with Troper Tours was well planed from day 1 to day end. We travelled in full comfort to beautiful heritage sites, tranquil villages and fascinating cultural sites. Each location was beautiful in its own way, and the itinerary allowed for ample time to enjoy each spot without being rushed. The vehicle was clean and spacious, which is well suited for our family, as to our guide he is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly liked well-coordination throughout the journey, timely and timely service without fail, effort on every detail. We discovered the legacy of Tamil Nadu there and how it is deeply rooted in tradition, but in a relaxed manner thanks to Troper Tours. It would have made our decision easier had we chosen them for our next South India holiday too.
