General Tour Description

If you have seen the Tamil Nadu government’s official emblem, you have seen Srivilliputhur — the gopuram on it is the one here, 192 feet of it, rising over a town of about seventy thousand people in Virudhunagar district. Very few visitors ever come to look at it in person.

The temple is dedicated to Andal, who is the reason this town matters in Tamil devotional history. She was the only woman among the twelve Alvar saints, and her Thiruppavai — thirty verses composed in the eighth or ninth century — is still recited in households across Tamil Nadu every morning through the month of Margazhi. She is said to have been found beneath a tulsi plant in the temple garden here, and the garland she wore before it was offered to the deity is the origin of the soodi kodutha sudarkodi tradition.

Twenty-five kilometres away is something entirely different. The Grizzled Giant Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary protects riverine forest along the Kovilar and Sengulam rivers, and it exists for a single endangered species — a large, silver-flecked squirrel found in only a handful of places on earth. The sanctuary also holds sambar, sloth bear and a good population of hill birds, and the forest type is unusual for Tamil Nadu.

Rajapalayam, the neighbouring town, gave its name to an indigenous sighthound bred by local polygar chieftains to guard estates and hunt boar. The breed is now recognised nationally and remains closely associated with the district.

Three days, one small corner of the south, and two things — a state emblem and an endangered squirrel — that almost nobody makes the trip for.

Related: if you are building a longer southern circuit, this pairs naturally with our Madurai Rameswaram Kanyakumari Tour or the Classic Tamilnadu Temple Trail. The full range is on our Tamil Nadu tour packages page.

Tour itinerary

  • Morning: Meet your driver at Madurai airport or Junction. Route briefing and departure south-west.
  • Late morning: Arrive Srivilliputhur and check in. The gopuram is visible from most of the town.
  • Afternoon: Andal Temple — the 192-foot rajagopuram, the shrine to Andal, and the tulsi garden where she is said to have been found. Plan around the midday closure; we time entry for the afternoon reopening.
  • Late afternoon: The temple’s Vatapatrasayi shrine, where Vishnu reclines on a banyan leaf, and the surrounding mada streets.
  • Evening: Srivilliputhur palkova from one of the original shops — a GI-registered milk sweet made only in this town.
  • Overnight: Srivilliputhur / Rajapalayam
  • Driving Distance: 75 km
  • Travel Time: 2 hrs
  • Meals Included: None (arrival day)
  • Morning: Early departure to the Grizzled Giant Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary. First light is when the squirrels are active in the canopy — later mornings are considerably less productive.
  • Late morning: Riverine forest walk along the Kovilar with a Forest Department escort. Sambar, bonnet macaque and a strong range of hill birds; sloth bear are present but rarely seen.
  • Afternoon: Ayyanar Falls, at the foot of the escarpment, with a small shrine beside the pool.
  • Late afternoon: Rajapalayam — the cotton mill belt, and a visit to a Rajapalayam hound kennel to see the indigenous breed the town is known for.
  • Evening: Return to your hotel.
  • Overnight: Srivilliputhur / Rajapalayam
  • Driving Distance: 70 km
  • Travel Time: 3 hrs total
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Morning: Drive to the Sathuragiri foothills at Thaniparai. The Sundara Mahalingam temple on the hill above opens only on specific days — Amavasai, Pournami and Tamil month transitions — and the climb is a serious four-hour trek. We visit the base temple and explain the pilgrimage rather than attempting the ascent.
  • Late morning: Watrap, a quiet Ghats-foot town with a view back toward the Meghamalai range.
  • Afternoon: Sankarankovil — the Sankaranarayanan temple, where Shiva and Vishnu are worshipped as a single combined form, which is genuinely uncommon.
  • Late afternoon: Return drive toward Madurai.
  • Evening: Drop at Madurai airport or Junction.
  • Driving Distance: 145 km
  • Travel Time: 4 hrs total
  • Meals Included: Breakfast

Frequently Asked Questions – Srivilliputhur Tour Package 3 Days – Andal Temple

Q1. What is a grizzled giant squirrel, and will I actually see one?

It is one of the largest squirrels in the world — around two feet including the tail — with a distinctive silver-grizzled coat, and it is endangered and endemic to a handful of riverine forest patches in southern India and Sri Lanka.

The Srivilliputhur sanctuary exists specifically to protect it, and it is one of the very few places where sightings are realistic.

Timing decides everything. They are active in the canopy at first light and again in the late afternoon, and they retreat through the middle of the day. Our morning walk is scheduled for exactly this reason. Most guests who go out early see them; guests who arrive at ten often don’t.

They are shy and they stay high. Bring binoculars if you have them — this is a watching animal rather than a photographing one, unless you have serious lenses.

Q2. Why is the Srivilliputhur gopuram on the Tamil Nadu government emblem?

Because it is one of the tallest and most recognisable temple towers in the state, and because of what the temple represents.

The rajagopuram stands at 192 feet across eleven tiers and dominates the town completely. It appears on the official seal of the Government of Tamil Nadu, which means most people in the state have seen it thousands of times without knowing where it is.

The temple is dedicated to Andal, the only woman among the twelve Alvar saints and one of the most significant figures in Tamil devotional literature. Her Thiruppavai is recited every morning through the month of Margazhi in households across the state.

The temple has two main shrines — one to Andal and one to Vatapatrasayi, Vishnu reclining on a banyan leaf. Both are worth time, and the mada streets around them retain their original layout.

Q3. Can I climb Sathuragiri, and is it included?

Not included, and deliberately so.

Sathuragiri’s Sundara Mahalingam temple is a genuine pilgrimage rather than a sightseeing stop. It opens only on specific days — Amavasai, Pournami and Tamil month transitions — and on those days the crowds are considerable.

The climb from Thaniparai is roughly four hours each way through Reserved Forest, on a rough trail, and it requires a Forest Department permit and a licensed guide. Pilgrims typically start before dawn. Elephants are present on the route and there have been incidents.

We take you to the base temple and explain the tradition, which for most guests is the right level of engagement.

If you genuinely want the full trek, tell us at least three weeks ahead. We will check whether your dates fall on an opening day, arrange the permit and guide, and restructure the itinerary around it. We will also be honest about the fitness it requires.

Q4. What is the Rajapalayam hound, and is the kennel visit worthwhile?

It is an indigenous Indian sighthound, bred by the polygar chieftains of this district to guard estates and hunt wild boar — pure white, tall, with a distinctive pink nose and often a genuinely intimidating presence.

The breed is recognised nationally and India Post has issued a stamp for it. It remains closely tied to Rajapalayam and the surrounding villages, where serious breeders still maintain lines.

The visit is to a working kennel rather than a display, arranged in advance. It is short — perhaps forty-five minutes — and it is the kind of thing you will remember precisely because no tour includes it.

One honest note: these are guarding dogs with strong protective instincts, not pets to approach freely. Follow the breeder’s instructions and do not approach unsupervised. Children should stay with an adult throughout.

Q5. When is the best time to visit?

November to February is the strongest window. Comfortable at 24–30°C, sanctuary conditions are good, and the birding is excellent.

December–January (Margazhi) is the most significant period at the Andal temple. The Thiruppavai recitation and the Andal Thirukalyanam festival fall in this window, and the atmosphere is genuinely different — considerably more crowded, and worth planning around either way.

March to June is hot. This is Virudhunagar district and it routinely exceeds 38°C. The sanctuary is less productive and the temple stone gets uncomfortable underfoot by midday.

July to September is dry with low rates. October to December brings the northeast monsoon, though this is inland and sees far less than the coast.

Note that the sanctuary may close during the annual fire season, usually parts of February to April. We confirm status before finalising your booking.

Q6. How do I get to Srivilliputhur, and what does it combine with?

Madurai (IXM) is the practical airport at 75 km, about two hours, with domestic and some Gulf connections. Madurai Junction (MDU) is the main railhead.

Srivilliputhur has its own small station, and Rajapalayam (RJPM) and Sankarankovil (SNKL) are on the same line, with limited services.

This trip combines well in several directions. Madurai is 75 km, so it slots into any southern circuit — see our Madurai Rameswaram Kanyakumari Tour or the seven-day Spiritual South India Tour. Courtallam and Tenkasi are 80 km south, and Meghamalai is 110 km north-west along the same Ghats foot.

Tell us your wider plans at booking and we will orient the pickup and drop accordingly.

Q7. What is palkova, and is it really only made here?

Palkova is milk reduced slowly over hours until it thickens into a dense, grainy sweet — no more than milk and sugar, with the whole character coming from the reduction.

Srivilliputhur palkova holds a Geographical Indication tag, which means the name is legally protected to this town. The distinction is attributed to the local milk, drawn from cattle grazing on the Ghats-foot pastures, and to a technique the town’s makers have used for generations.

You can buy palkova all over Tamil Nadu. This is where the reputation comes from, and the difference is genuinely noticeable.

The original shops sit in the streets around the temple. It travels reasonably well for a few days but is not a long-keeping sweet — buy it near the end of your trip rather than the start.

Q8. Where do we stay, and what standard should I expect?

Modest, and honest about it.

Srivilliputhur is a temple town of about seventy thousand people with basic lodges and small hotels — clean, functional, close to the temple, and unremarkable. Rajapalayam is larger, an industrial and textile town, with somewhat better mid-range options.

There is no premium or luxury tier in either. Nothing here approaches what you would find in Madurai.

If accommodation standard matters, we base you at Madurai — two hours away, with genuinely good hotels — and run this as two long day trips. You lose the early-morning sanctuary window, which is the best part of the trip, so we would rather you stayed locally. But it is an honest option and we will build it if you prefer.

Tell us at booking which you would rather.

Q9. Is this suitable for families and older travellers?

For older travellers, largely yes. The temples are level, the sanctuary walk is on flat riverine ground and can be shortened, and there is no ghat driving anywhere in this itinerary. The exception is the Andal temple, which involves barefoot walking on stone — we schedule it for the afternoon reopening rather than midday for that reason.

For children, this depends. The squirrel sanctuary and the hound kennel are usually the highlights and both work well. The temples ask for more patience than most children have.

Sathuragiri is not attempted in either case, which removes the only demanding element.

Tell us who is travelling and we will weight the days accordingly.

Q10. Why come to a district almost nobody visits?

Because it holds two genuinely singular things, and neither is on any circuit.

The gopuram here is on the state government’s emblem — reproduced on every official document in Tamil Nadu — and almost nobody visits it. Andal is the only woman among the twelve Alvars, and this is where her tradition begins. For anyone interested in Tamil devotional literature, that is not a minor stop.

And the grizzled giant squirrel exists in a handful of forest patches on earth. This sanctuary is one of the very few places you can reasonably expect to see one.

Add the indigenous hound breed, a GI-protected sweet, and the Sathuragiri pilgrimage tradition, and there is more of substance in this small district than in several better-known ones.

You will also, on most days, have all of it more or less to yourself.

To Put In A Nutshell Our family road trip of Tamil Nadu with Troper Tours was well planed from day 1 to day end. We travelled in full comfort to beautiful heritage sites, tranquil villages and fascinating cultural sites. Each location was beautiful in its own way, and the itinerary allowed for ample time to enjoy each spot without being rushed. The vehicle was clean and spacious, which is well suited for our family, as to our guide he is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly liked well-coordination throughout the journey, timely and timely service without fail, effort on every detail. We discovered the legacy of Tamil Nadu there and how it is deeply rooted in tradition, but in a relaxed manner thanks to Troper Tours. It would have made our decision easier had we chosen them for our next South India holiday too.

Troper Tours organized an amazing Tamil Nadu itinerary for our group of 6. Each place was special, whether it be interesting historical sites or local markets to vibrant countryside and cute towns. This was planned nicely with fast paced itinerary, allowing time to explore, click pictures and soak in the culture without being too hurried. We had a very friendly and knowledgeable guide who was more than happy to explain the history and customs of every place we visited. The car was clean, comfortable and even the longer journeys were not bad. We also appreciated the excellent planning, hospitality and personal attention throughout the trip. It truly was an experience we will never forget and I would recommend Troper Tours to anyone who is planning a Tamil Nadu holiday.
