Gavi & Thekkady Nature Tour 3N 4D

Price From – ₹13,999 per person (twin sharing)

Tour Activities included

The Gavi & Thekkady Nature Tour 4 Days / 3 Nights is built around the Periyar Tiger Reserve’s own guided programmes rather than the standard sightseeing circuit. It includes a guided nature walk or an evening jungle patrol on arrival, a full day of bamboo rafting on Periyar lake with forest department guides, the forest road drive from Vandiperiyar into Gavi with permits arranged, trekking and canoeing at Gavi, a jeep safari through the cardamom estates and shola forest, a night at the eco-lodge inside the reserve where there is no mobile signal, and an early morning walk at Gavi before the exit south through Angamoozhy.

General Tour Description

Most Thekkady itineraries do the same three things: the Periyar lake boat safari, a spice plantation walk and a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu show in the evening. They are all worth doing and they are on most of our other Kerala packages.

This itinerary does none of them. It is built instead around the programmes the Periyar Tiger Reserve runs itself — the ones that take you into the forest on foot and on water rather than past it in a crowd.

The guides on those programmes are worth knowing about before you book. Many of them are former poachers and sandalwood smugglers, recruited through the reserve’s Eco-Development Committees from the 1990s onward and retrained as trackers and guides. It is among the more remarkable conservation stories in India, and it means the person walking ahead of you knows the forest in a way no trained naturalist could.

Gavi is the other half. It sits inside the reserve about two and a half hours from Thekkady, reached by a forest road with checkposts at either end, and you cannot simply drive there — entry is permit-based and managed by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation. It is cardamom estate, shola forest and a lake, with a few small settlements and no mobile signal. Domestic visitors know it from the 2012 film Ordinary, which is why it now needs booking ahead.

Four days is enough for both properly. It is not enough if you also want the boat safari and the spice gardens, and we would rather you took a different itinerary than a rushed version of this one. Our full range is on the Kerala tour packages page.

A Deeper Wildlife Experience in Thekkady & Gavi

This itinerary is designed for travellers who want to spend time inside Kerala’s forests rather than simply visit a wildlife destination for a short boat ride. It combines Periyar’s guided forest programmes with the remote Gavi landscape, including trekking, bamboo rafting, canoeing, forest roads and wildlife-focused activities.

Day 1 — Arrive Thekkady: Nature Walk or Jungle Patrol

Drive: about 4 hours from Kochi or Madurai · Overnight: Thekkady / Kumily

We collect you in Kochi or Madurai — both are roughly four hours away, so this route works from either side of the Ghats — and drive up into the cardamom hills.

You should arrive by mid-afternoon, which leaves the evening for the first of the reserve’s programmes. There are two options and we will book whichever suits you.

The nature walk is around three hours through forest and grassland close to the lake edge, in a small group with a guide, covering perhaps four or five kilometres at an unhurried pace.

It is the gentler option and the better one if you have just driven four hours.

The jungle patrol runs in the evening, roughly three hours after dark, walking forest trails with guides on an actual patrol route.

Which should you choose? The nature walk is the easier first-day option. The jungle patrol is a more unusual after-dark forest experience and better suited to travellers who still have the energy for several hours on foot.

Day 2 — Full-Day Bamboo Rafting in Periyar Tiger Reserve

Full day: roughly 8am–5pm · Overnight: Thekkady / Kumily

The single best thing you can do in Periyar, and almost nobody on a standard itinerary does it because it takes a whole day.

You start on foot before dawn with forest guides and an armed watcher, trekking through grassland and evergreen forest to the lake edge.

Then you take to bamboo rafts — lashed poles, paddled — and cross the water quietly.

The advantage is simple: the standard safari boat carries many passengers and a diesel engine, while the raft carries a very small group and moves almost silently.

What you see depends on the day, as it always does. Elephant at the shoreline is common, gaur and sambar likely, Nilgiri langur almost certain, and the Great Hornbill often enough to look up.

Tiger is genuinely rare and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something they cannot deliver.

Lunch is carried and eaten in the forest. You are back by late afternoon, tired, and nothing is scheduled afterwards.

Advance booking matters: Places on the bamboo rafting programme are capped daily and the programme does not operate year-round. We book it before you travel rather than trying to arrange it on the morning.

Day 3 — Thekkady to Gavi Forest Reserve

Drive: about 2.5 hours · 60 km · Overnight: Gavi

West through Vandiperiyar and into the forest. The distance is short and the time is long because the road from the checkpost onward is a narrow forest road through the reserve with a properly enforced speed limit and frequent reasons to stop.

Gavi permit required: You cannot drive this forest road without a permit. The checkposts are staffed and we arrange the required permission in advance.

Elephant on the road is normal rather than exceptional; your driver will know when to wait and when to turn around.

Gavi itself is an unusual and rather lovely place — a cardamom estate, a lake, shola forest on the ridges above and a handful of small settlements.

Many people living here are descendants of Sri Lankan Tamil repatriates settled in the 1970s to work the cardamom estates.

The afternoon programme is run by the forest development corporation: a guided trek through the shola, canoeing on the lake and a jeep safari through the estate roads at dusk when the animals move.

This is prime country for the lion-tailed macaque, one of the distinctive primates of the Western Ghats.

You stay inside the reserve. There is no mobile signal at Gavi, and the accommodation is simple rather than smart. Both of those are part of the experience.

Day 4 — Gavi Morning Walk & Departure

Drive: about 4.5 hours to Kochi or Trivandrum

An early morning walk while the mist is still on the lake, which is when Gavi is at its best and when much of the wildlife is moving.

After breakfast we leave south through Angamoozhy and out of the reserve towards Pathanamthitta, rather than doubling back to Vandiperiyar.

It is a different forest road and means no part of this itinerary is retraced.

From there it is roughly four and a half hours to Kochi airport, or a similar time to Trivandrum.

Allow three and a half hours before an international departure, and tell us your flight before booking so we can decide which exit makes the most sense.

Gavi & Thekkady Nature Tour – Frequently Asked Questions

Can We Drive to Gavi Ourselves?

No. Gavi sits inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the forest roads leading to it have staffed checkposts at the Vandiperiyar and Angamoozhy ends.

Entry is permit-based and managed by the relevant forest authorities, and vehicles without the required permission can be turned back.

Night travel through the reserve is also restricted, so arrival and departure need to be timed around the checkpost operating periods.

We obtain the permits before you travel and schedule the drive accordingly.

How Is This Different from a Standard Thekkady Tour?

Completely, and deliberately.

Most Kerala itineraries that include Thekkady focus on the Periyar lake boat safari, a spice plantation walk and an evening cultural performance. Those work well when Thekkady is one stop on a longer Kerala journey.

This itinerary instead uses the reserve’s guided programmes — nature walking, jungle patrol and a full day of bamboo rafting — putting much more emphasis on time inside the forest.

If you want both styles of Thekkady experience, allow more days rather than compressing them into four.

Our guide to Kerala trip planning mistakes that ruin itineraries explains why trying to fit too much into each destination usually makes the trip worse.

Are Some Periyar Forest Guides Former Poachers?

Many guides and forest workers have come through community-based conservation programmes involving people who once depended on the forest through illegal or unsustainable activities.

The reserve began working through Eco-Development Committees to provide alternative livelihoods, including guiding, tracking and forest protection work.

The practical benefit for visitors is that many of the people accompanying you know the forest exceptionally well from years of direct experience.

What Are the Chances of Seeing a Tiger in Gavi or Thekkady?

Very low, and we would rather you book knowing that.

Periyar is a genuine tiger reserve, but visitor sightings are uncommon. A wildlife trip here should not be sold around the promise of seeing a tiger.

Animals you have a much more realistic chance of seeing include elephants, gaur, sambar, wild boar and Nilgiri langur.

Gavi also gives you a chance of seeing lion-tailed macaques, while birdlife can include Great Hornbill, Malabar grey hornbill and many other Western Ghats species.

Leopard and dhole are occasional rather than expected sightings.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Gavi and Thekkady?

September to March is generally the best window. The forest is green after the monsoon, temperatures are more comfortable and the outdoor programmes are usually easier to operate.

One period to consider carefully is the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, broadly around mid-November to mid-January. Roads around Pathanamthitta and some approaches to the region can become considerably busier during this period.

The monsoon from June through August can affect forest programmes and make walking trails more difficult.

April and May are hotter and drier, although the reduced water availability can sometimes concentrate wildlife near lakes and water sources.

Our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Kerala covers the wider seasonal picture.

How Fit Do We Need to Be for the Gavi & Thekkady Nature Tour?

Moderate fitness is recommended.

The bamboo rafting day is the most demanding part of the itinerary — several kilometres of walking on uneven forest ground before and after the rafting, carrying your own water, and no easy way to shorten the programme after it has started.

The nature walk is gentler and generally lasts around three hours. Gavi’s trekking and canoeing are moderate and can sometimes be shortened, while the jeep safari requires no significant walking.

Tell us your party’s fitness level when enquiring so we can recommend the appropriate activities. This itinerary is not well suited to travellers with significant mobility limitations.

What Should We Bring for Gavi and Periyar Forest Activities?

Bring proper walking shoes rather than sandals, long trousers, long sleeves, a hat and a lightweight waterproof layer at any time of year.

Binoculars are particularly useful on this itinerary.

Leeches are common on forest trails during and immediately after the monsoon. Leech socks are available locally.

Plastic is restricted inside the reserve, so carry a refillable water bottle.

There is no mobile signal at Gavi, so let family or friends know before entering the reserve.

If your party includes teenagers who would enjoy a longer active Kerala trip, our 9-day Kerala family adventure itinerary adds Wayanad and the coast to a similar style of holiday.

Can We Combine Gavi with the Rest of Kerala?

Yes. Gavi can be added to a wider Kerala trip because both its entry and exit routes are within several hours of major destinations on the standard circuit.

A common approach is to add this four-day section before or after a backwaters and beach itinerary.

If you are particularly interested in less-touristed parts of Kerala, another option is our 6-day Malabar heritage tour covering Beypore’s shipyards, Theyyam and Bekal.

The two routes together create a very different ten-day Kerala journey with little overlap with the standard Munnar–Alleppey circuit.

Ms. Elizebeth Kennedy & Friend

Our 5-day Kerala trip with Troper Tours was a lovely experience from the moment we arrived until the final day. My friend and I travelled from the UK and everything was organised smoothly, which made the journey comfortable and easy. We enjoyed the changing scenery, local food, tea hills, backwaters and the relaxed pace of the trip. One of our favourite moments was reaching Munnar, where we could enjoy the cool weather, plantations and peaceful mountain views. The vehicle was comfortable, our driver was punctual and helpful, and the team was always easy to contact whenever we needed anything. What we appreciated most was that the trip never felt rushed or overly planned. We had enough time to enjoy Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Trivandrum properly. Troper Tours took good care of us throughout the five days. A memorable Kerala holiday, and we would happily recommend them to other travellers visiting from the UK.

To Put In A Nutshell Our family road trip of Tamil Nadu with Troper Tours was well planed from day 1 to day end. We travelled in full comfort to beautiful heritage sites, tranquil villages and fascinating cultural sites. Each location was beautiful in its own way, and the itinerary allowed for ample time to enjoy each spot without being rushed. The vehicle was clean and spacious, which is well suited for our family, as to our guide he is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly liked well-coordination throughout the journey, timely and timely service without fail, effort on every detail. We discovered the legacy of Tamil Nadu there and how it is deeply rooted in tradition, but in a relaxed manner thanks to Troper Tours. It would have made our decision easier had we chosen them for our next South India holiday too.
