General Tour Description

Northern Tamil Nadu is the part of the state that tour itineraries skip. There are no famous temples here and no beaches, which is exactly why Yercaud has stayed the way Ooty was fifty years ago — a small hill station around a lake, surrounded by coffee estates, reached by a road with twenty hairpin bends and almost no traffic on it.

Yercaud sits at 1,515 metres in the Shevaroy range, part of the Eastern Ghats rather than the Western. The difference matters: it is drier, the forest is sholas and silver oak rather than rainforest, and the estates grow coffee, oranges and pepper together on the same slopes. It is also close — an hour from Salem, four from Bangalore, and considerably easier to reach than Ooty, which needs five hours from Coimbatore and a permit-controlled road.

The second half of this trip drops back to the plains for Hogenakkal, where the Cauvery leaves Karnataka and falls through a gorge of carbonatite rock so unusual that geologists come for the stone rather than the water. You cross it in a coracle — a round basket boat spun by a boatman who has done it since childhood — and eat fish fried on the rocks where it was caught.

Four days, two landscapes, and a corner of Tamil Nadu that most visitors to the state never see. Suited to travellers coming from Bangalore or Chennai for a short break, to families who want a hill station without the Ooty crowds, and to anyone who has already done the temple circuit and wants somewhere quieter.

Tour itinerary

  • Morning: Meet your driver at Salem Junction or Salem Airport. Route briefing and departure toward the Shevaroy foothills.
  • Afternoon: The ascent begins at Kannankurichi and climbs 28 kilometres through twenty numbered hairpin bends. We stop at bend 13 and at the Arthur’s Seat viewpoint, where the plains open out behind you. Check in at Yercaud.
  • Evening: Yercaud Lake and the boathouse, then Ladies’ Seat and Gent’s Seat for sunset over the Salem plain. Dinner at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Yercaud
  • Driving Distance: 35 km
  • Approximate Travel Time: 1 hr 15 min
  • Meals Included: None (arrival day)
  • Important Notes: The climb is short but continuous, and motion sickness is common on the hairpins. Sit in front if you are prone to it and tell your driver — he will slow the descent side. Temperatures drop sharply after dark; carry a light jacket even in April.
  • Morning: A working coffee estate walk with the planter — Yercaud grows arabica under silver oak shade, with pepper vines on the trunks and orange trees between the rows. You see all three crops in the same acre, which is unusual.
  • Afternoon: Kiliyur Falls, a 300-foot drop reached by a descent of roughly 300 steps into the gorge. Then the Botanical Garden and its orchidarium, run by the Horticulture Department.
  • Evening: Pagoda Point at 1,500 metres, where five stone cairns mark the viewpoint, and the Shevaroyan Temple in a cave on the range’s highest peak. Sunset from the point.
  • Overnight: Yercaud
  • Driving Distance: 40 km local
  • Approximate Travel Time: 2 hrs total
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Kiliyur Falls is at its fullest between July and December and reduces to a trickle by March. The step descent is steep and unrailed in places — not suitable for guests with knee trouble, and we substitute the Servarayan viewpoint instead. The cave temple entrance is low and requires stooping.
  • Morning: Check out and descend to Salem. Continue north-west toward Dharmapuri through mango orchards and sago mills.
  • Afternoon: Arrive Hogenakkal. The Cauvery arrives from Karnataka and drops through a gorge of carbonatite — one of the oldest exposed rock formations in South India. Coracle ride through the narrows with a licensed boatman.
  • Evening: Fried Cauvery fish on the rocks, and the traditional oil massage offered by masseurs on the riverbank if you want it. Sunset over the main falls.
  • Overnight: Hogenakkal / Dharmapuri
  • Driving Distance: 130 km
  • Approximate Travel Time: 3 hrs
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Coracle rides are suspended when the Cauvery is in spate, usually July to September, and occasionally after Karnataka releases water from Krishnaraja Sagar — this can happen at short notice. Life jackets are compulsory and we will not board a boat without them. Negotiate the massage price before you sit down; it is not a fixed rate.
  • Morning: A last look at the falls from the upper viewpoint, where the full drop is visible in a way it is not from the water.
  • Afternoon: Return drive south to Salem via Dharmapuri, or continue north to Krishnagiri and Bangalore if that suits your onward travel better.
  • Evening: Drop at Salem Junction, Salem Airport, or Bangalore (surcharge applies).
  • Overnight:
  • Driving Distance: 130 km to Salem / 145 km to Bangalore
  • Approximate Travel Time: 3 hrs / 3 hrs 30 min
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: The Bangalore drop is genuinely convenient from Hogenakkal and often cheaper for guests flying international. Tell us at booking and we route Day 4 north instead of south at no change to the itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions – Yercaud Tour Package 4 Days – Hogenakkal Falls & Salem

Q1. Will the coracle rides at Hogenakkal actually be running when I visit?

Usually yes, but this is the one thing on the route nobody can guarantee, and you should know why before you book.

Hogenakkal sits where the Cauvery crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu. When Karnataka releases water from the Krishnaraja Sagar dam upstream, the river rises fast and coracle operations are suspended — sometimes at a few hours’ notice, sometimes for weeks. It happens most often between July and September, which is why we price that window lower rather than pretending the risk isn’t there.

From October to May the river is normally settled and rides run daily. We check conditions the day before and restructure your afternoon if needed. What we won’t do is put you in a boat without a life jacket or with an unlicensed boatman when the water is high.

Q2. How does Yercaud compare with Ooty or Kodaikanal?

They’re in different mountain ranges, and it shows in everything.

Yercaud is in the Eastern Ghats at 1,515 metres; Ooty and Kodaikanal are Western Ghats at 2,240 and 2,130. Yercaud is drier, its forest is shola and silver oak rather than rainforest, and its estates grow coffee, pepper and oranges together rather than tea.

The practical differences matter more. Yercaum is one hour from Salem Junction, where Ooty is five hours from Coimbatore. There’s no permit-controlled road, no toy train to book sixty days ahead, and a fraction of the traffic. It’s smaller — you will not find Ooty’s range of hotels or restaurants.

If you want a famous hill station with plenty of choice, take Ooty. If you want the one Ooty was fifty years ago, come here.

Q3. Are the twenty hairpin bends difficult, and will anyone get carsick?

The road is well surfaced and not dangerous — but yes, motion sickness is the most common complaint we hear on this route.

The climb gains roughly 1,500 metres in 28 kilometres through twenty numbered, signposted bends. It takes about an hour. The bends come in quick succession with little straight road between them, which is what unsettles people rather than the gradient.

Practical advice that works: sit in the front seat, eat lightly before the climb rather than not at all, keep a window open, and tell your driver — he will take the descent noticeably slower, which is the direction most people struggle with. If someone in your party is badly affected, medication taken 45 minutes before departure is worth it.

Q4. Is Kiliyur Falls worth it, and can everyone manage the descent?

It depends entirely on when you come, and the honest answer is that it isn’t always worth it.

Kiliyur drops around 300 feet and is at its best from July to December, when it carries monsoon water. By March it thins to a stream, and in April and May it can be close to dry. We’ll tell you which to expect for your dates.

The descent is roughly 300 steep steps, unrailed in places and slippery when wet. It’s not suitable for anyone with knee trouble, for very young children, or in the rain. Where that applies we substitute the Servarayan viewpoint instead — that’s built into the package rather than being something you have to ask for.

Q5. Can I do this trip from Bangalore rather than Chennai?

Yes, and for most travellers Bangalore is the better starting point.

Bangalore airport is about four hours from Yercaud, and Hogenakkal is closer still — roughly three and a half hours, since it sits near the Karnataka border. Chennai is around six hours to Yercaud, so you’d spend an extra two hours each way.

We can pick up at Bangalore and drop you back there on Day 4 at no change to the itinerary — the route simply runs north on the final day instead of south. There’s a surcharge for the longer transfer, and it’s usually worth it against the cost of an internal flight or an overnight train.

If you’re arriving from overseas, Bangalore is also the more practical airport by a wide margin. Krishnagiri and Hosur work as pickup points too if you’re driving down yourself and want to meet the vehicle partway.

To Put In A Nutshell Our family road trip of Tamil Nadu with Troper Tours was well planed from day 1 to day end. We travelled in full comfort to beautiful heritage sites, tranquil villages and fascinating cultural sites. Each location was beautiful in its own way, and the itinerary allowed for ample time to enjoy each spot without being rushed. The vehicle was clean and spacious, which is well suited for our family, as to our guide he is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly liked well-coordination throughout the journey, timely and timely service without fail, effort on every detail. We discovered the legacy of Tamil Nadu there and how it is deeply rooted in tradition, but in a relaxed manner thanks to Troper Tours. It would have made our decision easier had we chosen them for our next South India holiday too.

Troper Tours organized an amazing Tamil Nadu itinerary for our group of 6. Each place was special, whether it be interesting historical sites or local markets to vibrant countryside and cute towns. This was planned nicely with fast paced itinerary, allowing time to explore, click pictures and soak in the culture without being too hurried. We had a very friendly and knowledgeable guide who was more than happy to explain the history and customs of every place we visited. The car was clean, comfortable and even the longer journeys were not bad. We also appreciated the excellent planning, hospitality and personal attention throughout the trip. It truly was an experience we will never forget and I would recommend Troper Tours to anyone who is planning a Tamil Nadu holiday.
