General Tour Description

Twenty kilometres of the Coromandel coast holds a Catholic basilica that draws twenty million pilgrims a year, a Sufi dargah whose tallest minaret was gifted by a Hindu king, and a Danish fort that flew the Dannebrog for 225 years. Almost nobody sells this stretch as a journey, which is precisely why it is worth taking.

Velankanni is the anchor. The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health is one of the most visited Christian shrines in Asia, and its congregation has always been substantially non-Christian — Hindus and Muslims come in numbers, which tells you something about how this coast works. Twelve kilometres north, the Nagore Dargah has been drawing the same mixed devotion since the sixteenth century.

Then the coast turns European. Tharangambadi — Tranquebar to the Danes — was a Danish colony from 1620 until it was sold to Britain in 1845. Dansborg Fort still stands above the surf, and King Street behind it retains the Lutheran church of 1718 and the site where Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg printed the first Tamil Bible.

The route finishes at Point Calimere, where a sand spit reaches toward Sri Lanka and greater flamingos gather in thousands between November and February.

This is a five-day trip for travellers interested in how faiths and empires actually settled on one coastline — and for pilgrims who would rather not be bussed in and out of Velankanni in a single day.

Tour itinerary

  • Morning: Meet your driver at Tiruchirappalli International Airport or Junction railway station. Welcome briefing and departure east toward the coast.
  • Afternoon: Drive through the Cauvery delta — paddy, canal bridges and village temples the whole way. Comfort stop at Thanjavur bypass. Arrive Velankanni and check in
  • Evening: Walk to the Basilica for the evening service. The church is at its most affecting after dark, when the façade is lit and the forecourt fills. Sea-facing dinner.
  • Overnight: Velankanni
  • Driving Distance: 165 km
  • Approximate Travel Time: 3 hrs 30 min
  • Meals Included: None (arrival day)
  • Important Notes: Modest dress is expected inside the Basilica. Footwear is removed at the entrance and there is a supervised counter. If your visit falls between 29 August and 8 September, the annual festival is in progress — accommodation must be booked months ahead and crowds are very large.
  • Morning: Return to the Basilica in daylight for the Gothic interior, the museum of offerings and the shrine tank. Early morning is quiet enough to actually see it.
  • Afternoon: Drive 12 km north to Nagore. The Dargah of Hazrat Syed Abdul Qadir Shahul Hamid has five minarets; the tallest, at roughly 40 metres, was built by the Maratha ruler Pratap Singh in gratitude for a cure — a Hindu king’s gift to a Sufi shrine, still standing. Lunch of Nagore biryani.
  • Evening: Nagapattinam harbour at dusk, then return to Velankanni.
  • Overnight: Velankanni
  • Driving Distance: 40 km total
  • Approximate Travel Time: 1 hr 15 min total
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Heads are covered at the Dargah — scarves are available at the entrance. Photography is restricted inside both the Basilica sanctum and the Dargah’s inner chamber.
  • Morning: Check out and drive 55 km up the coast to Tharangambadi. The road runs close enough to the shore that you see the sea most of the way.
  • Afternoon: Dansborg Fort, built in 1620 and the second-largest Danish fort ever constructed. The museum inside holds Danish East India Company artefacts. Then the Masilamani Nathar temple of 1305, standing on the shoreline itself.
  • Evening: Walk King Street — the Town Gateway, the Governor’s Bungalow, and the New Jerusalem Church of 1718. Sunset from the seawall.
  • Overnight: Tharangambadi
  • Driving Distance: 55 km
  • Approximate Travel Time: 1 hr 30 min
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Dansborg closes on Fridays. Tharangambadi is small and quiet with limited dining after 9pm; your hotel restaurant is the reliable option.
  • Morning: Drive 25 km north to Poompuhar, the Chola port city described in the Silappathikaram and largely lost to the sea. The Art Gallery reconstructs the epic across seven tiers.
  • Afternoon: South through Vedaranyam, where the 1930 Salt Satyagraha reached the coast. Continue to Kodikkarai and the Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary — dry evergreen forest, salt swamp and the sand spit reaching toward Sri Lanka.
  • Evening: Late-afternoon game drive for blackbuck, spotted deer and, between November and February, greater flamingos in the lagoons.
  • Overnight: Vedaranyam / Kodikkarai
  • Driving Distance: 145 km
  • Approximate Travel Time: 3 hrs 30 min
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Flamingos are seasonal — peak numbers are December and January, and they are largely absent from May to September. Accommodation at Kodikkarai is basic; guests wanting higher standards stay at Vedaranyam or Nagapattinam and we adjust the drive accordingly.
  • Morning: A dawn walk in the sanctuary while the light is good and the birds are active, then breakfast and check-out.
  • Afternoon: Return drive west across the delta to Tiruchirappalli.
  • Evening: Drop at Trichy airport or railway station.
  • Overnight:
  • Driving Distance: 200 km
  • Approximate Travel Time: 4 hrs 30 min
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Book departures after 6pm. If you have an earlier flight, we start at 6am and skip the sanctuary walk — tell us at booking and we will plan the day around your timings.

Frequently Asked Questions – Velankanni Tour Package 5 Days – Nagore & Tranquebar

Q1. When is the Velankanni festival, and should I plan around it or avoid it?

The annual festival runs eleven days, from the flag hoisting on 29 August to 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of Mary. It is the largest gathering on this coast — hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, a car procession, and continuous services in several languages.

It is genuinely extraordinary, and it is genuinely difficult. Accommodation triples in price and sells out ninety days ahead, traffic is diverted well outside the town, and darshan queues run for hours. If the atmosphere is the reason you are coming, book early and accept the crowds. If you want to see the Basilica properly, come in December or February instead — you will be able to walk into an empty church at seven in the morning.

Q2. Can I visit the Basilica and the Nagore Dargah if I am not Christian or Muslim?

Yes, and you will be in the majority. Velankanni has always drawn a substantially non-Christian congregation — Hindus form a large share of the pilgrims, many arriving with the same vows and offerings they would bring to a temple. The Nagore Dargah works the same way. Its tallest minaret, the Periya Manara at roughly 131 feet, was built by Pratap Singh, the Maratha ruler of Thanjavur, in gratitude for a cure — a Hindu king’s gift to a Sufi shrine, still standing after two and a half centuries.

Nobody will ask your religion at either place. This coast has never worked that way, and that shared devotion is a large part of why the route is worth taking.

Q3. When can I actually see flamingos at Point Calimere?

November to February, with December and January the peak. Greater flamingos arrive with the northeast monsoon when the Great Salt Swamp fills, and numbers can run into the thousands across the lagoons.

Outside those months they are largely absent. From roughly March to September you will see blackbuck, spotted deer, wild boar and the sanctuary’s dry evergreen forest — worth the visit, but not the photograph you may have in mind. We will tell you which applies to your dates rather than let you find out on the day. If flamingos are the reason you want this trip, travel in December or January and we will build in a second game drive.

Q4. What should I wear at three different religious sites in one trip?

Modest dress covering shoulders and knees works everywhere on this route. Beyond that, each site differs slightly.

At the Basilica, footwear is removed at the entrance and there is a supervised counter; shorts and sleeveless tops are discouraged. At the Nagore Dargah, heads are covered by everyone including men — scarves are available at the entrance and we carry spares in the vehicle. At the Masilamani Nathar temple in Tharangambadi, standard Hindu temple etiquette applies: footwear off, no leather belts or bags inside.

Photography is restricted inside the Basilica sanctum and the Dargah’s inner chamber. Carry a light scarf and slip-on shoes and you will be comfortable at all three.

Q5. Velankanni is usually sold as a day trip — why does this package take five days?

Because a day trip gets you the Basilica and nothing else, and the Basilica is not the only thing here.

Within an hour’s drive there is a sixteenth-century Sufi dargah, a Danish colonial town that flew the Dannebrog for 225 years, the site where Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg printed the first Tamil Bible in 1715, a drowned Chola port from the Silappathikaram, and a Ramsar-listed wetland. Almost no operator connects them, which is why the coast is quiet even when Velankanni is not.

Five days also means seeing the Basilica twice — lit at night, and again in the early morning when it is empty. Those are two different buildings, and pilgrims who have only ever come for the day tell us the second is the one they remember.

To Put In A Nutshell Our family road trip of Tamil Nadu with Troper Tours was well planed from day 1 to day end. We travelled in full comfort to beautiful heritage sites, tranquil villages and fascinating cultural sites. Each location was beautiful in its own way, and the itinerary allowed for ample time to enjoy each spot without being rushed. The vehicle was clean and spacious, which is well suited for our family, as to our guide he is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly liked well-coordination throughout the journey, timely and timely service without fail, effort on every detail. We discovered the legacy of Tamil Nadu there and how it is deeply rooted in tradition, but in a relaxed manner thanks to Troper Tours. It would have made our decision easier had we chosen them for our next South India holiday too.

Troper Tours organized an amazing Tamil Nadu itinerary for our group of 6. Each place was special, whether it be interesting historical sites or local markets to vibrant countryside and cute towns. This was planned nicely with fast paced itinerary, allowing time to explore, click pictures and soak in the culture without being too hurried. We had a very friendly and knowledgeable guide who was more than happy to explain the history and customs of every place we visited. The car was clean, comfortable and even the longer journeys were not bad. We also appreciated the excellent planning, hospitality and personal attention throughout the trip. It truly was an experience we will never forget and I would recommend Troper Tours to anyone who is planning a Tamil Nadu holiday.
