General Tour Description

Valparai is the hill station that never became one. It sits at 3,500 feet on the Anamalai range, reached by a road with forty numbered hairpin bends, and the entire plateau is a working tea estate — around 220 square kilometres of it, with a town of a few thousand people in the middle. There are no shopping streets, no boating lakes and no crowds. What there is instead is wildlife living in and around the plantations in a way that happens almost nowhere else in India.

The lion-tailed macaque is the reason serious wildlife travellers come. It is one of the rarest primates in the world, endemic to the Western Ghats shola forest, and the Puthuthottam estate near Valparai holds one of the few troops habituated enough to be reliably seen. Elephants move through the estates routinely — the tea companies run their own warning systems — and great hornbills nest in the remaining forest fragments.

Below the plateau, the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Topslip covers 958 square kilometres of the same range. Safaris here are quieter and less commercial than Mudumalai’s, and the elephant sightings are consistent.

The drive up is the other reason people come. Bend 9 passes directly beside Monkey Falls; by bend 25 you are looking down on the Aliyar reservoir from a thousand feet; and the last ten bends run through cloud most afternoons.

This is a trip for people who would rather see one endangered primate properly than tick off five viewpoints — and for anyone who has done Ooty and Kodaikanal and wants the version without the traffic.

Tour itinerary

  • Morning: Meet your driver at Coimbatore airport or railway junction. Route briefing, then depart south-west through Pollachi’s coconut belt.
  • Late morning: Stop at Aliyar Dam and its garden, at the foot of the climb. This is the last flat ground for 40 kilometres.
  • Afternoon: Begin the ascent. Bend 9 passes directly beside Monkey Falls — a short stop, though swimming is prohibited when water is high. Bends 25 to 32 give the reservoir views. Watch for elephants between bends 15 and 25, which is active forest.
  • Late afternoon: Arrive Valparai and check in. The plateau is tea in every direction.
  • Evening: Short walk to the Balaji Temple viewpoint for sunset over the estates.
  • Overnight: Valparai
  • Driving Distance: 105 km
  • Travel Time: 3 hrs 30 min
  • Meals Included: None (arrival day)
  • Important Notes: The climb is the single most demanding drive in this itinerary — 40 bends in 40 kilometres, continuous. Motion sickness is common; sit in front. The road closes to night traffic in some seasons for elephant movement, so we time arrival before 5pm.
  • Morning: Early departure to Puthuthottam estate, where a habituated troop of lion-tailed macaques lives in a forest fragment inside the plantation. Early morning is when they come down to feed. A naturalist accompanies you.
  • Late morning: Guided tea estate walk with a plantation supervisor — plucking, the two-leaves-and-a-bud standard, and the factory floor where withering, rolling and oxidation happen.
  • Afternoon: Return for lunch, then Nallamudi Poonjolai viewpoint, where the plateau drops away toward the Kerala border.
  • Evening: Estate roads at dusk, when gaur and elephants come out to graze the plantation edges. Return before dark.
  • Overnight: Valparai
  • Driving Distance: 45 km local
  • Travel Time: 2 hrs total
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Lion-tailed macaques are wild and endangered. Do not feed them under any circumstances — it is the single greatest threat to the troop and it is illegal. Keep 10 metres back and do not use flash. The factory floor is closed on Sundays and during the annual maintenance shutdown; we confirm access for your dates.
  • Morning: Drive to Sholayar Dam, the second-deepest reservoir in Asia, on the Tamil Nadu–Kerala boundary. The upper viewpoint looks straight into Kerala’s Athirapally catchment.
  • Late morning: Chinnakallar Falls, in one of the wettest inhabited places in India — annual rainfall here exceeds most of the Western Ghats.
  • Afternoon: Nirar Dam and the Grass Hills escarpment viewpoint. The grasslands above the treeline are Nilgiri tahr country, though access to the Grass Hills core is restricted.
  • Evening: Free at the estate. Great hornbills are frequently seen crossing the valley at dusk.
  • Overnight: Valparai
  • Driving Distance: 70 km
  • Travel Time: 3 hrs total
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Chinnakallar is often inaccessible during heavy monsoon and the approach track can be washed out. Sholayar’s upper viewpoint requires a forest permit which we arrange in advance. Photography of dam structures is restricted — your guide will indicate where.
  • Morning: Check out and descend the forty bends — slower going down than up. Elephants are commonly seen on this stretch in early morning.
  • Late morning: Continue to Topslip, the main entry point for the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, covering 958 square kilometres.
  • Afternoon: Forest Department safari in an official vehicle — elephant herds are the consistent sighting, with gaur, sambar, Malabar giant squirrel and, with luck, a leopard. Tigers are present but rarely seen.
  • Evening: Check in near Topslip or Pollachi. Nature interpretation centre if timing allows.
  • Overnight: Topslip / Pollachi
  • Driving Distance: 95 km
  • Travel Time: 3 hrs 30 min
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Safaris are operated solely by the Forest Department — private vehicles are not permitted inside the core. Slots are limited and must be booked ahead; we do this at confirmation. The reserve closes to visitors during the annual fire season, typically parts of February to April, and dates vary yearly.
  • Morning: A last early drive on the reserve buffer road, when animal activity is highest.
  • Late morning: Return through Pollachi — a coconut and jaggery town with a genuinely good local market and a well-preserved main street.
  • Afternoon: Drive to Coimbatore.
  • Evening: Drop at Coimbatore airport or railway junction.
  • Overnight:
  • Driving Distance: 60 km
  • Travel Time: 2 hrs
  • Meals Included: Breakfast
  • Important Notes: Book departures after 4pm. Coimbatore airport is 15 km from the city with good domestic connections. If you are continuing to Kerala, Athirapally is only 60 km from Sholayar as the crow flies but the road route runs 180 km via Chalakudy — tell us and we can arrange the onward leg.

Frequently Asked Questions – Valparai Tour Package 5 Days – Anamalai Tiger Reserve

Q1. What are my actual chances of seeing a lion-tailed macaque?

Good, and better than almost anywhere else — but this is wildlife, not a zoo.

The troop at Puthuthottam lives in a forest fragment inside the tea estate and is habituated to human presence, which is why sightings here are more reliable than in the deep forest. Most guests who go out early see them. Late morning is considerably worse, because they retreat into the canopy as the day warms.

Our advice is simple: go at first light, be patient, stay quiet, and don’t expect them to perform. And do not feed them. Fewer than 4,000 lion-tailed macaques remain in the wild, and food-conditioning by well-meaning visitors is one of the documented pressures on this population.

Q2. Are the forty hairpin bends harder than Ooty or Yercaud?

Yes — this is the tightest sustained ghat road in Tamil Nadu.

Ooty’s Kallar road has 36 bends over a longer distance. Yercaud has 20. Valparai packs 40 numbered bends into 40 kilometres, which means a bend roughly every kilometre with almost no straight road to recover on. It takes about ninety minutes for the climb alone.

The road surface is good and it isn’t dangerous. The issue is motion sickness, and it’s the single most common complaint we hear. Sit in the front, eat something light rather than nothing, keep a window open, and take medication 45 minutes ahead if you’re prone. The descent affects people more than the climb.

Q3. Will the Anamalai Tiger Reserve be open when I visit?

Usually, but not always — and this is worth checking before you fix dates.

The reserve closes annually during the fire season, typically parts of February to April, with exact dates set each year by the Forest Department based on conditions. It isn’t published far ahead, which is frustrating for planning.

We confirm the status before finalising your booking. If your dates fall in a closure, we tell you rather than letting you arrive to a shut gate, and we restructure Day 4 around the buffer zone and estate wildlife instead — which is genuinely productive, since elephants and gaur are outside the core anyway.

One thing to be clear about: safaris are operated only by the Forest Department, in their vehicles, with their drivers. Anyone offering you a private jeep into the core zone is not operating legally, and we won’t book it.

Q4. What happens if we meet elephants on the ghat road?

You stop and wait, and so does everyone else.

Elephants use the Valparai ghat regularly, particularly between bends 15 and 25 where the road passes through active forest, and most often at dawn and dusk. Your driver knows the stretch and will pull up at a safe distance.

The rules matter: stay in the vehicle, don’t sound the horn, don’t attempt to pass, and don’t get out for a photograph. Elephants here are wild animals moving through their own corridor, and vehicles that crowd them are how incidents happen. Delays are usually fifteen to thirty minutes.

The road is also closed to night traffic in some seasons for exactly this reason, which is why we time your arrival before 5pm on Day 1.

Q5. Is Valparai worth it if I’ve already been to Ooty and Kodaikanal?

Genuinely yes, and the reason is that it isn’t the same kind of place.

Ooty and Kodaikanal are hill towns — lakes, viewpoints, markets, restaurants, and a lot of other visitors. Valparai is a working plantation with a small town in the middle, around 3,500 residents, no shopping street and no boating.

What you get instead is wildlife in a landscape that people work in. Elephants crossing estate roads, great hornbills over the valley, and one of the last populations of an endangered primate — all within a few kilometres of your room.

If you want things to do, Ooty is better. If you have done Ooty and found it crowded, this is what you were hoping for.

Peak Season Price (April – June, and 20 Dec – 5 Jan)
Add 30–40%. Valparai has very limited accommodation — a handful of estate bungalows and small resorts for the entire plateau — so peak dates sell out three to four months ahead rather than weeks.

Off Season Price (July – September)
Deduct 15%. The plateau is spectacular in monsoon and wildlife activity is high, but Chinnakallar access is unreliable and the hairpin road demands a cautious pace. We discount modestly and explain the trade-off rather than avoiding the season.

To Put In A Nutshell Our family road trip of Tamil Nadu with Troper Tours was well planed from day 1 to day end. We travelled in full comfort to beautiful heritage sites, tranquil villages and fascinating cultural sites. Each location was beautiful in its own way, and the itinerary allowed for ample time to enjoy each spot without being rushed. The vehicle was clean and spacious, which is well suited for our family, as to our guide he is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly liked well-coordination throughout the journey, timely and timely service without fail, effort on every detail. We discovered the legacy of Tamil Nadu there and how it is deeply rooted in tradition, but in a relaxed manner thanks to Troper Tours. It would have made our decision easier had we chosen them for our next South India holiday too.

This was planned nicely with fast paced itinerary, allowing time to explore, click pictures and soak in the culture without being too hurried. We had a very friendly and knowledgeable guide who was more than happy to explain the history and customs of every place we visited. The car was clean, comfortable and even the longer journeys were not bad. We also appreciated the excellent planning, hospitality and personal attention throughout the trip. It truly was an experience we will never forget and I would recommend Troper Tours to anyone who is planning a Tamil Nadu holiday.
