General Tour Description

Discover South Kerala in 5 Days with Troper Tours

South Kerala offers a different kind of holiday from the popular Kochi–Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey circuit.

Instead of spending hours travelling between distant hill stations and changing hotels almost every day, this 4 Nights / 5 Days South Kerala tour focuses on the southern coastline, where beautiful beaches, tranquil backwaters, historic landmarks and local culture can be explored at a more comfortable pace.

Your journey begins in Thiruvananthapuram, commonly called Trivandrum, Kerala’s capital city.

After arriving at Trivandrum International Airport, you travel to the coastal destination of Kovalam, where you spend two nights.

Kovalam is known for its three crescent-shaped beaches, palm-lined shores, restaurants, seaside resorts and iconic lighthouse. It also provides a convenient base for visiting Poovar, located farther south along the coast.

A full-day excursion introduces you to the Poovar backwaters, where the Neyyar River approaches the Arabian Sea through a landscape of mangroves, waterways, fishing communities and golden sands.

On the third day, you travel north through Trivandrum, with the opportunity to discover the city’s cultural and architectural heritage before continuing to Varkala.

Your final two nights are spent in Varkala, one of Kerala’s most distinctive coastal destinations.

Unlike Kovalam’s traditional beach-resort atmosphere, Varkala is particularly famous for its dramatic laterite cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea, scenic walking paths, cafés and laid-back coastal character.

The itinerary also includes time to explore Kappil Lake and Beach, a short distance north of Varkala, where the backwaters and sea form a memorable landscape.

Why This Route Works

The itinerary is deliberately arranged from south to north:

Trivandrum Airport → Kovalam → Poovar Day Trip → Trivandrum Sightseeing → Varkala → Departure

Poovar is visited while staying in Kovalam, avoiding the need for an additional hotel change.

Trivandrum’s main heritage attractions are scheduled on the day you move from Kovalam to Varkala, reducing unnecessary backtracking.

Two nights in Varkala give you time to enjoy the cliff area and surrounding coastline rather than treating the destination as a hurried sightseeing stop.

For travellers who want a short Kerala holiday focused on beaches, culture and relaxation, this route offers a practical alternative to trying to cover the entire state in five days.

Troper Tours, a Trivandrum-based Kerala tour operator, arranges this itinerary with private transportation, customizable accommodation and local travel assistance.

Detailed Day-by-Day Travel Plan

South Kerala Tour Itinerary 4 Nights / 5 Days

Discover South Kerala through a well-paced private itinerary that combines Kovalam’s beaches, the backwaters of Poovar, Trivandrum’s cultural heritage and Varkala’s dramatic coastline. The route includes two nights each in Kovalam and Varkala to avoid unnecessary hotel changes.

Trivandrum Airport → Kovalam 2N → Poovar Day Trip → Trivandrum City → Varkala 2N → Departure
Day 01

Arrival at Trivandrum Airport & Transfer to Kovalam

Drive: Approx. 30–50 min Distance: 12–16 km Stay: Kovalam

Your South Kerala holiday begins when you arrive at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV). Your assigned Troper Tours driver will meet you according to the confirmed airport pickup arrangements and transfer you to Kovalam, one of Kerala’s best-known coastal destinations.

The drive normally takes approximately 30–50 minutes, depending on traffic, the airport terminal and your hotel location. After reaching Kovalam, check in to your hotel or resort and enjoy some time to relax.

Explore Kovalam’s Famous Beaches

If your flight arrives early enough, you can enjoy an introductory walk along the coastline. Kovalam consists of several distinct beach areas, each offering a different atmosphere.

Lighthouse Beach: Kovalam’s most recognizable beach is known for its red-and-white lighthouse, restaurants, seaside walks and views across the Arabian Sea.

Hawa Beach: Also called Eve’s Beach, this coastal area offers an active waterfront atmosphere and opportunities for photography and evening walks.

Samudra Beach: A quieter section of Kovalam’s coastline, particularly suitable for visitors looking for peaceful views and a more relaxed setting.

Evening at Leisure

Spend the evening enjoying a sunset, tasting Kerala cuisine, visiting a local restaurant or relaxing at your resort. Guests arriving late will proceed directly to their hotel without additional sightseeing.

Troper Tours Local Recommendation

Avoid scheduling too many attractions on your arrival day. If you are arriving after a long international flight, a direct hotel transfer and a relaxed evening are often the better choice.

Overnight Stay: Kovalam
Day 02

Poovar Backwaters, Golden Beach & Aazhimala

Drive: Approx. 18–25 km one way Excursion: Full day Stay: Kovalam

After breakfast, begin a scenic excursion from Kovalam to Poovar Backwaters. Poovar is a picturesque coastal destination known for its winding waterways, coconut groves, mangrove vegetation and estuary landscapes near the Arabian Sea.

Unlike Alleppey’s overnight houseboat experience, Poovar is particularly suitable for a shorter backwater cruise during a South Kerala beach holiday.

Poovar Backwater Boat Cruise

You may choose an optional motorboat excursion arranged through a suitable local operator. Depending on the route, water levels and weather, the cruise may pass through mangrove-lined channels, coastal villages and scenic waterways near the estuary.

The landscape offers opportunities to observe coconut palms, traditional fishing activity and waterbirds such as kingfishers, herons and egrets. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

Poovar Golden Beach

One of Poovar’s most recognizable features is the golden sandbar near the meeting point of the river and sea. The combination of backwater, sand and ocean creates a beautiful setting for nature photography.

Beach access and boating routes depend on weather, tides and local operating conditions. Swimming near the estuary is not recommended without clear local safety guidance.

Lunch Break

Enjoy lunch at a suitable restaurant or resort. Lunch is payable separately unless included in your confirmed tour quotation.

Aazhimala Shiva Temple

On the return journey, you may visit the Aazhimala Shiva Temple, known for its dramatic coastal setting and large Shiva sculpture.

The location combines religious heritage with views of the Arabian Sea. Visitors should follow the applicable temple dress code, entry rules and photography restrictions.

Return to Kovalam

Return to your Kovalam hotel in the afternoon. The remaining time is free for beach walks, resort facilities, local shopping or relaxation.

Troper Tours Local Recommendation

Consider doing the Poovar boat cruise in the morning. Before boarding, confirm the cruise duration, boat category, life-jacket availability and the total boating cost. Boat charges are excluded from the indicative base package price unless stated otherwise in your quotation.

Overnight Stay: Kovalam
Day 03

Kovalam to Varkala via Trivandrum Heritage Sightseeing

Drive: Approx. 55–70 km total Tour: 5–7 hours including stops Stay: Varkala

After breakfast, check out of your Kovalam hotel and begin your journey toward Varkala. Rather than taking a direct transfer, this day’s route includes selected sightseeing in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the capital of Kerala.

This route is intentionally designed to reduce unnecessary driving. By combining city sightseeing with the transfer to Varkala, you can experience Trivandrum’s cultural heritage without adding another hotel stay.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Visit the historic East Fort area and the surroundings of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, one of Kerala’s important religious landmarks.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has a strong historical connection with the Travancore royal family.

Important entry rule: Entry inside the temple is restricted to Hindus, and strict traditional dress requirements apply. Eligible Hindu travellers who wish to attend darshan should inform Troper Tours in advance so the schedule can be adjusted accordingly.

Other visitors can explore the publicly accessible heritage surroundings and continue to alternative cultural attractions.

Kuthiramalika Palace Museum

Continue to Kuthiramalika Palace Museum, also known as Puthenmalika Palace. Located near East Fort, the palace reflects traditional Kerala architecture and the history of the former Travancore royal family.

The museum is generally closed on Mondays. Opening hours and admission should be checked before the planned visit.

Optional Napier Museum

If time permits, you may include the Napier Museum, known for its distinctive architectural style and historical collections.

It is generally closed on Mondays. Because this is also a transfer day, we recommend choosing the most relevant cultural attractions rather than rushing through every museum.

Continue to Varkala

After lunch and sightseeing, proceed north to Varkala. The drive from Trivandrum city generally takes around 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic and your hotel.

Check in to your chosen hotel or resort. If time permits, enjoy an evening walk along Varkala Cliff.

Evening at Varkala Cliff

Varkala is famous for its distinctive laterite cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea. The cliffside features walking paths, cafés, small shops and beautiful coastal views.

Troper Tours Local Recommendation

If your priority is Padmanabhaswamy Temple darshan, tell us before confirming the tour. Temple worship may take considerable time and cannot always be combined with multiple museums on the same day.

Overnight Stay: Varkala
Day 04

Varkala Cliff, Papanasam Beach & Kappil Lake

Kappil: Approx. 6–9 km Tour: Relaxed sightseeing Stay: Varkala

After breakfast, enjoy a full day exploring Varkala and the surrounding coastal landscapes. This is intentionally the most relaxed day of the itinerary, with no long-distance hotel transfer.

Varkala North Cliff

Begin with a walk along the famous Varkala Cliff. The elevated laterite cliffs overlook the Arabian Sea and offer beautiful coastal scenery, especially during the morning and evening.

Enjoy photography, visit the small shops or relax at a café overlooking the sea. Cliff walking routes may be restricted during periods of erosion or severe weather.

Papanasam Beach

Continue to Papanasam Beach, one of Varkala’s most important beaches. The beach is popular among leisure travellers and also holds religious importance for Hindu pilgrims.

Visitors may enjoy the coastline and the surrounding beach atmosphere. Swimming depends on current sea conditions and lifeguard guidance.

Kappil Lake & Beach

Later, drive north to Kappil, a beautiful destination where Kappil Lake and the Arabian Sea lie close together.

The area is known for its scenic coastal road, backwater views, coconut palms and peaceful surroundings.

Kappil is especially appealing for nature photography and travellers wanting a less crowded setting.

Optional local boating may be available depending on seasonal conditions and operators.

Additional Experiences in Varkala

You can customize the day further by choosing one or two of the following experiences.

  • Sivagiri Mutt: An important spiritual centre associated with Sree Narayana Guru.
  • Janardhana Swamy Temple: A well-known Hindu pilgrimage destination.
  • Surfing Lesson: Available through suitable instructors when sea conditions permit.
  • Yoga or Wellness: Optional sessions through appropriate local providers.
  • Anchuthengu Heritage Excursion: An alternative for guests interested in colonial maritime history.

Evening at Leisure

Return to your hotel or spend the evening around the cliffside. Enjoy sunset views, restaurants and a relaxed final evening on Kerala’s southern coast.

Troper Tours Local Recommendation

Choose accommodation according to your preferred atmosphere. Hotels near North Cliff can be convenient for cafés and walks, while resorts farther from the main cliff may offer quieter stays. Some cliff and beach access points involve stairs or uneven paths.

Overnight Stay: Varkala
Day 05

Varkala to Trivandrum Airport or Railway Station – Departure

Airport: Approx. 50–57 km Drive: Approx. 1.5–2 hours Departure Day

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before checking out. According to your flight or train schedule, your driver will transfer you to the agreed departure point.

Travellers departing from Trivandrum International Airport should allow adequate time for traffic, airport check-in and security procedures.

The transfer normally takes around 1.5–2 hours, although the actual journey may take longer during busy periods.

For guests travelling by train, drop-off can be arranged at Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station or Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station, according to the confirmed booking.

Late Departure Options

Travellers with a late flight may request additional sightseeing, a lunch stop or extended vehicle use, subject to availability and hotel checkout rules.

Your five-day South Kerala holiday concludes with wonderful memories of Kovalam, Poovar, Trivandrum and Varkala.

Troper Tours Local Recommendation

Share your exact departure flight details before booking. Airport reporting time must be added separately to the estimated road journey. Do not schedule an important flight too close to hotel checkout or sightseeing activities.

Traveller Questions Answered

South Kerala Tour 4N/5D – Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a private tour covering Kovalam, Poovar, Trivandrum and Varkala? These answers explain pricing, transportation, hotel stays, activities and important travel considerations.

1. What is the starting price for the South Kerala Tour 4N/5D?

The indicative starting price is ₹18,999 per person on a twin-sharing basis for two adults in the standard hotel category.

This rate is subject to hotel availability, travel dates, group size and confirmed services. Optional Poovar boating, entry fees and applicable taxes are charged according to the final quotation.

2. Is five days enough to explore South Kerala?

Yes. Five days and four nights are enough for a comfortable trip covering Kovalam, a Poovar day excursion, selected Trivandrum sightseeing and Varkala.

This duration is not recommended for also including distant destinations such as Munnar, Thekkady or Wayanad without making the journey rushed.

3. How many nights are spent in Kovalam and Varkala?

The itinerary includes two nights in Kovalam and two nights in Varkala, making four nights in total.

Poovar is visited on a day trip while staying in Kovalam, so an additional hotel change is not required.

4. Is the Poovar backwater boat ride included?

Transportation to Poovar is included in the proposed sightseeing route.

The boat cruise itself is optional and payable separately unless specifically included in the final quotation. Cruise duration and availability depend on weather and local operations.

5. Is this a private South Kerala tour?

Yes. The package can be arranged with a private air-conditioned vehicle and driver for the scheduled itinerary.

It is not a fixed-departure shared group tour. Vehicle type depends on group size and confirmed arrangements.

6. Can we start and end the trip at Trivandrum Airport?

Yes. Pickup from Trivandrum International Airport on Day 1 and departure transfer on Day 5 can be arranged.

Railway-station drop-off can also be requested. Departure timing is planned around your actual flight or train schedule.

7. Can we visit Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple?

Eligible Hindu travellers may request temple darshan during the Trivandrum sightseeing day.

Temple entry is restricted to Hindus, and traditional dress requirements apply. Timings and access must be confirmed before the visit.

Non-Hindu travellers can explore the accessible heritage area and alternative attractions. Read more through Kerala Tourism .

8. Which is better for a holiday: Kovalam or Varkala?

Both are attractive coastal destinations, but their atmosphere is different.

Kovalam is known for its lighthouse, crescent-shaped beaches and traditional resort-holiday atmosphere. Varkala is known for its dramatic cliffs, coastal cafés and relaxed beach environment.

The itinerary includes both destinations so travellers can enjoy these differences.

9. Is swimming safe at Kovalam and Varkala?

Swimming conditions depend on tides, currents, waves and seasonal weather.

Guests should follow lifeguard instructions and beach safety notices. Swimming should be avoided when beaches are closed or sea conditions are unsafe.

10. Can Kanyakumari be added to this itinerary?

Yes. Kanyakumari can be added through a customized itinerary.

However, a full-day Kanyakumari excursion would reduce time available for the existing destinations. We generally recommend adding an extra day if Kanyakumari is an important priority.

11. Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes. The two-night stays in Kovalam and Varkala reduce frequent hotel changes.

Families should confirm room arrangements, child-seat requirements, boat safety and suitable sightseeing before booking.

12. Is Varkala Cliff suitable for senior travellers?

Many senior travellers can enjoy Varkala’s coastal viewpoints.

However, certain walking paths and beach access points involve slopes, stairs or uneven surfaces.

For guests with mobility limitations, we can discuss appropriate hotels, vehicle access and alternative sightseeing.

13. Does the package include an overnight houseboat?

No. An overnight houseboat stay is not part of this standard four-night itinerary.

The backwater experience is a Poovar day trip with optional boating. Travellers wanting an overnight houseboat in Alleppey or Kumarakom should consider a longer Kerala itinerary.

Explore our Kerala tour packages for alternative routes.

14. Can we upgrade to 4-star or luxury hotels?

Yes. Hotel categories can be customized according to your preferences and budget.

We can provide quotations for selected comfort, premium or luxury accommodation, subject to availability.

15. What is the best time to visit Kovalam, Poovar and Varkala?

October through February is generally a favourable time for coastal sightseeing in South Kerala.

March to May can be hot and humid, while the southwest monsoon from June to September may affect boating, beach access and outdoor activities.

Weather and marine safety conditions must be checked during your actual travel dates.

16. How can we book this tour with Troper Tours?

Share your travel dates, number of adults and children, preferred hotel category, arrival and departure details and any optional activities.

Our team will prepare a personalized itinerary and written quotation.

A 50% advance is normally required for booking confirmation, subject to the agreed terms.

One of our favourite moments was reaching Munnar, where we could enjoy the cool weather, plantations and peaceful mountain views. The vehicle was comfortable, our driver was punctual and helpful, and the team was always easy to contact whenever we needed anything.
