A genuine luxury Kerala holiday costs roughly ₹90,000 to ₹2,50,000 per person land-only, depending on length and properties. Nine days sits around ₹1,25,000 and twelve days around ₹1,90,000. British and American operators sell comparable trips at £3,000 to £3,800 per person, but those figures include international flights and a reseller margin.

Be careful with anything advertised as a “Kerala luxury package” at ₹20,000 to ₹40,000. On the Indian booking sites, luxury is a filter label rather than a standard — one major aggregator lists packages under its luxury filter that use three-star hotels. The test is not the price, it is whether the quote names the specific properties and room categories.

In Kerala the distinction is character rather than star rating. The properties international luxury operators book are mostly heritage conversions, plantation estates and eco-resorts rather than city five-stars — Coconut Lagoon is reached only by boat, Brunton Boatyard occupies an 18th-century shipyard, Neeleshwar Hermitage is sixteen thatched cottages on an empty beach.

Three practical markers separate real luxury from an upgraded standard trip. The quote names specific hotels and room categories rather than a star rating. A licensed site guide is included rather than sold to you on arrival. And every base gets two nights, so you unpack once instead of repacking each morning.

The properties most used by international luxury operators are Brunton Boatyard and Old Harbour Hotel in Fort Kochi, Windermere Estate in Munnar, Spice Village at Thekkady, Coconut Lagoon and Kumarakom Lake Resort on the backwaters, Marari Beach Resort on the coast, Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra at Kovalam, and Neeleshwar Hermitage and Taj Bekal in the far north.

Which of them belongs in your itinerary depends on the route rather than a ranking. Coconut Lagoon and Kumarakom Lake Resort are both excellent and sit twenty minutes apart, so you would choose one. Neeleshwar and Bekal are similarly close. Our 9-day luxury itinerary uses the central circuit properties, and the 12-day itinerary runs the state end to end including the Malabar coast.

Usually yes, because you remove a layer. British and American luxury operators sell Kerala at around £3,000 to £3,800 per person including flights. They are good at what they do, but they do not operate on the ground here — they contract a Kerala destination management company to run the trip. We are that kind of company, based in Thiruvananthapuram.

What that means in practice is the same properties, the same vehicles and the same guides, with one margin rather than two. Our prices are land-only, so you book your own flights and keep control of routing and airline choice. The trade-off is worth stating honestly: a UK operator sells you a flight-inclusive package with UK consumer protection attached, and that has real value to some travellers. Three things separate a premium houseboat from a standard one. It is a private one-bedroom boat with your own crew and chef rather than a shared vessel. The cabin fit-out and bedding are materially better. And the air conditioning runs through the afternoon cruise rather than only overnight.

That last point is the one nobody explains. Most Kerala houseboats run their air conditioning off a generator from roughly 9pm to 6am, which gives you a comfortable night and a warm afternoon. A small number run it all day, and those are the boats we book on our luxury itineraries. Between March and May the difference is significant. In December and January it matters far less, and we will tell you so rather than upsell it.

Ours do not. All our prices are land-only, covering hotels, the private vehicle and driver, guides, activities and the houseboat, so you book your own international flights. Most UK and US luxury operators quote flight-inclusive prices, which is the main reason their headline figures look so much higher than ours.

Booking flights yourself has two advantages beyond cost. You choose the airline and routing, and you can use airline points or an upgrade. It also lets you book open-jaw, which several of our routes need — into Kochi and out of Trivandrum, or into Trivandrum and out of Kannur — so you never spend a final day driving back to the airport you arrived at.

What you get instead is a written itemised itinerary with room categories stated before any payment, a booking voucher afterwards, a published cancellation policy, and a registered company you can verify with India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs. If financial protection is a priority, book your flights separately on a credit card and take comprehensive travel insurance — advice we would give regardless of who you book the ground arrangements with.

Licensed guides are included at the main sites on our luxury itineraries, and they are separate people from your driver. In Kerala a driver and a guide are formally different qualifications. Your driver stays with you for the whole trip and knows the roads, the timings and where to stop — but a driver is not licensed to guide.

Our director, Prasannakumar S, holds Kerala Tourism State Level Guide accreditation KT/SLG/2019/27, which is independently verifiable on the Kerala Tourism guide portal. If an operator tells you the driver will guide you at Fort Kochi or Periyar, they are saving money at your expense, and it is worth asking the question before you book.

Three to four months for December and January, and six months for the fortnight between 20 December and 5 January, when rates roughly double and the best properties sell out first. For the rest of the October to March season, six to ten weeks is usually comfortable. Monsoon travel can often be arranged at short notice.

The constraint is inventory rather than our schedule. Properties like Coconut Lagoon, Neeleshwar Hermitage and Windermere Estate hold very few rooms — sixteen cottages at Neeleshwar, for instance — so peak dates go early. If your dates are already close, tell us anyway and we will say honestly whether we can still secure the properties in the itinerary rather than quoting you whatever is left.

October to March for reliable weather across hills, backwaters and coast. December and January are driest and busiest. February and March are warm, quieter and still excellent. Our northern itinerary is best between December and April, when Theyyam ritual performances run in the village shrines of Kannur and Kasaragod.

June to September is monsoon, and it is genuinely worth considering at this level. The hills are extraordinary, the backwaters are at their fullest, hotel rates are at their lowest of the year, and it is the traditional Ayurvedic treatment season because the humidity is considered ideal for the therapies. Yes. Our luxury itineraries include a consultation and one treatment at a Green Leaf classified centre, but a genuine Ayurvedic programme needs a minimum of seven to fourteen nights in one place, with a physician-designed regimen, prescribed diet and no touring alongside it. That is a different holiday, and we quote it separately.

The classification matters. Green Leaf is awarded by the Kerala Department of Tourism and requires qualified physicians, trained therapists and proper facilities. A great many hotel “Ayurvedic spas” hold no classification at all. Ask any property for its classification before you book a treatment programme — it is the single most useful question in Kerala wellness travel.

Every one of them, and most clients change something. The itineraries on this page are starting points, not fixed departures. Common changes are adding nights at the beach, swapping Munnar for Wayanad, upgrading to a private-pool villa at one or two properties rather than all of them, and rebuilding the route around fixed flight dates.
