Tour Activities included

The Kerala Deep Dive 12 Days / 11 Nights includes more than 25 activities across heritage, hills, wildlife, backwaters and coast. Highlights include the Fort Kochi heritage quarter and a Kathakali performance, the Athirappilly and Vazhachal waterfalls, Eravikulam National Park and the Munnar tea estates, a dawn boat safari on Periyar Lake, a guided spice plantation walk, a private Alleppey houseboat night, the Kumarakom bird sanctuary, cycling the coconut lanes at Marari, and the Varkala cliff.

General Tour Description

Twelve days is what Kerala asks for if you want to understand it rather than tick it off. This route takes the classic circuit at half pace and adds the places most itineraries drop for time — Athirappilly, Kumarakom, Marari and Varkala. You spend two nights almost everywhere, which means unpacking less and seeing more, and the whole thing runs north to south so you fly into Kochi and out of Trivandrum without repeating a road. Suited to first-time visitors with a fortnight, and to anyone who has done a shorter Kerala trip and wants the rest of it.

Tour itinerary

Met at Cochin airport and transferred to Fort Kochi, about ninety minutes. Settle in, then walk down to the Chinese fishing nets for sunset — they are still worked by hand and the light off the harbour at that hour is the reason most Kerala trips begin here. Overnight in Fort Kochi.

A full day in the old quarter: the Mattancherry Palace murals, the antique warren of Jew Town, St Francis Church where Vasco da Gama was first buried, and the spice warehouses that still smell of what they store. In the evening, a Kathakali performance — arrive an hour early to watch the performers apply their own makeup, which is more interesting than the play. Overnight in Fort Kochi.

Ninety minutes north-east to Athirappilly, Kerala’s largest waterfall — an eighty-foot curtain on the Chalakudy river, thunderous in and just after the monsoon and still substantial in the dry season. Vazhachal is a short drive further upstream and usually far quieter. Overnight near Athirappilly.

About four hours east on the Malakkappara forest road, which climbs through rainforest and tea rather than taking the standard highway — slower, considerably more beautiful, and with a genuine chance of elephants at the roadside. Arrive Munnar in the afternoon. Overnight in Munnar.

Eravikulam National Park in the morning for the Nilgiri tahr, then Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and the Tea Museum. Note that Eravikulam closes for roughly February and March during the calving season; in those months we substitute Top Station. Overnight in Munnar.

Three hours south-east through cardamom country. Afternoon spice plantation walk, and in the evening a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance. Overnight in Thekkady.

The first boat on Periyar Lake at around 7am, which is the slot where animals actually come to the water. Back for breakfast, then four hours west to Alleppey. Board a private houseboat around midday, cruise Vembanad Lake and the village canals, moor by 5:30pm. Overnight on the houseboat.

Disembark after breakfast and cross to Kumarakom, forty minutes away on the far shore of the same lake — wider water, far fewer boats, and a bird sanctuary at the edge of the resort belt. Late afternoon is the best time in the sanctuary. Overnight in Kumarakom.

Ninety minutes back towards the coast to Marari, a working fishing village with a long palm-backed beach and almost nothing scheduled. Overnight in Marari.

Nothing planned. Cycle the coconut lanes, watch the boats come in, eat what they brought. This is the day the trip stops being a tour. Overnight in Marari.

Three and a half hours south to Varkala, where a red laterite cliff drops straight to Papanasam beach and the cliff-top strip fills with cafés in the evening. The most travelled-feeling of Kerala’s beaches and the most photogenic. Overnight in Varkala.

A last morning on the cliff, then ninety minutes to Trivandrum airport. Ending here rather than at Kochi saves five hours of driving on your final day.

Frequently Asked Questions –Kerala Deep Dive 12 Days

Q1. Can this itinerary be customized to include more adventure or more leisure?

Yes. Travellers can choose to add trekking, off-road rides, bamboo rafting, village cycling or Ayurvedic wellness experiences. If you prefer a slow holiday, the schedule can be adjusted to include spa sessions, longer houseboat hours or additional beach days. Troper Tours customizes the tour fully based on your comfort and interests.

Q2. What type of accommodation can we expect during this 12-day Kerala tour?

You will stay in a handpicked mix of hill resorts, backwater retreats, wildlife lodges and premium beachside hotels. Each property is chosen for cleanliness, good reviews, scenic views and friendly service. In Alleppey, you enjoy a private houseboat with freshly prepared meals, giving you a signature Kerala backwater experience.

Q3. Is the Kerala Deep Dive 12 Days tour suitable for slow travellers and seniors?

Yes. This itinerary is designed with a comfortable pace, making it suitable for seniors and travellers who prefer relaxed sightseeing. Long drives are broken into shorter segments, and every destination includes ample leisure time. Resorts are carefully chosen for comfort, accessibility and minimal walking requirements unless requested otherwise.

Q4. How much physical activity is required during this 12-day journey?

The itinerary includes gentle nature walks, light viewpoint visits and optional activities like boating or village strolls. Most experiences are easy and suitable for families and older travellers. Adventure activities are optional and only arranged upon request, so the trip remains comfortably paced throughout.

Q5. Will we get enough time to enjoy each destination without rushing?

Absolutely. The Kerala Deep Dive itinerary is crafted to avoid rushed sightseeing. Each destination—Munnar, Thekkady, Kumarakom, Alleppey, Varkala and Kovalam—has its own dedicated day or more. This ensures you experience local culture, landscapes and cuisine in a meaningful and unhurried way.

Q6.. Is twelve days too long for one state?

Kerala is small on a map and slow on the ground — the roads wind, and the distance between Munnar and Alleppey takes four hours to cover eighty miles. Twelve days is what turns that from a frustration into the point. If you have a week, our 7-day travel plan covers the classic circuit instead.

Q7. Why fly out of Trivandrum instead of Kochi?

Kerala’s highlights run north to south. Flying home from Kochi means driving five hours back up the coast on your last day, past everything you have already seen. Trivandrum is ninety minutes from Varkala, and booking it as an open-jaw ticket usually prices within a few pounds of a standard return.

Q8. How many nights on the houseboat?

One. Houseboats stop cruising at sunset and moor overnight, so a second night adds a stationary day rather than new scenery. This route gives you the boat for one night and then Kumarakom for the wider water, which is a better use of two nights than staying aboard.

Q9.Can we swap Varkala for Kovalam?

Yes, and some couples prefer to. Kovalam is more developed with more resort infrastructure and is forty minutes from the airport; Varkala is quieter and more scenic. Tell us which you would rather and we will adjust the final two nights.

To Put In A Nutshell Our family road trip of Tamil Nadu with Troper Tours was well planed from day 1 to day end. We travelled in full comfort to beautiful heritage sites, tranquil villages and fascinating cultural sites. Each location was beautiful in its own way, and the itinerary allowed for ample time to enjoy each spot without being rushed. The vehicle was clean and spacious, which is well suited for our family, as to our guide he is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We particularly liked well-coordination throughout the journey, timely and timely service without fail, effort on every detail. We discovered the legacy of Tamil Nadu there and how it is deeply rooted in tradition, but in a relaxed manner thanks to Troper Tours. It would have made our decision easier had we chosen them for our next South India holiday too.

Troper Tours organized an amazing Tamil Nadu itinerary for our group of 6. Each place was special, whether it be interesting historical sites or local markets to vibrant countryside and cute towns. This was planned nicely with fast paced itinerary, allowing time to explore, click pictures and soak in the culture without being too hurried. We had a very friendly and knowledgeable guide who was more than happy to explain the history and customs of every place we visited. The car was clean, comfortable and even the longer journeys were not bad. We also appreciated the excellent planning, hospitality and personal attention throughout the trip. It truly was an experience we will never forget and I would recommend Troper Tours to anyone who is planning a Tamil Nadu holiday.
