Tour itinerary

Your Kerala Backwaters Itinerary Start with pick up from Cochin Airport / Railway Station. Drive to Alepy (Alappuzha) also known as the Venice of the East where you will board your own private houseboat. Drive along peaceful canals, coconut groves and village paths. Savor local Kerala cuisine on board, see the sun sets over the backwaters and sleep on the houseboat.

Wake up to the murmur of water and birdcalls. Resume your cruise around lagoons, rivers and paddy fields after breakfast in Alleppey. Visit villages along the way to meet locals and hear about coir-making or toddy tapping (like rubber-tapping but for a different type of sap). Enjoy freshly prepared meals onboard. You can even spend your evening on deck in the starlit sky. Overnight on the houseboat.

After breakfast, you disembark your houseboat and proceed to Kumarakom located on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Arrive at your lake-side resort and enjoy the ambiance of calm waters. And later, take in the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, home to herons and kingfishers among migrating birds. Overnight free for canoe ride, Ayurvedic treatments or enjoy resort Facilities. Overnight stay in Kumarakom.

Enjoy breakfast and check out from the resort on the last day of your Kerala Backwaters Tour. Deciding on what you want to do depending on how much time you have, a village walk or short lake cruise. Afterwards drive back to Cochin Airport or Railway Station with ever lasting memories of houseboats.

Frequently Asked Questions – Kerala Backwaters Itinerary

Q1. What makes the Kerala Backwaters Itinerary unique compared to other Kerala tours?

The backwaters itinerary is about slow travel and chilling, not rushing from A to B. Rather than hill station or wildlife, the focus is on lakes, waterways and a canoodle in a houseboat between Alleppey and Kumarakom with village walks bird-watching and staying at lakeside resorts. It’s perfect for travelers who want to take in Kerala’s peaceful waters, rural life and genuine cultural experiences.

Q2. What type of meals are provided during the Kerala Backwaters Itinerary?

The houseboat stay also comes with delicious made-to-order traditional Kerala food, including appam, fish curry and vegetarian options for lunch, evening tea snacks, dinner & following day breakfast. At Kumarakom resorts, breakfast alone is served so one would have the choice of dining in-house or visiting eateries that lie close by. Dietary restrictions can be catered for with prior notice.

Q3. Is the Kerala Backwaters Itinerary suitable for families with children?

Yes and the backwaters itinerary is extremely family friendly. Children often appreciate the novelty of spending the night on a houseboat, bird watching at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and taking short canoe trips. The transfers and houseboats are moving at a slow speed which are quite convenient for families to travel safe and comfortably. Resorts can also offer trappings for kids to make your stay more convenient.

Q4. What activities are included besides the houseboat cruise?

The houseboat tour is the main event, but village walks, cultural programs, bird sanctuaries and optional canoe trips are part of the itinerary too. Repose near the resort pool or indulge in Ayurvedic wellness treatments. It’s this mix of guided, leisure and free time that makes the trip feel well-rounded rather than exhausting.

Q5. Can the Kerala Backwaters Itinerary be customized for luxury travel?

Yes, travelers may want to splurge on luxury houseboats with air-conditioned rooms, private dining and sundecks. There are boutique and five-star spa resorts in Kumarakom, complete with infinity pools and fine dining. Premium extras such as candlelight dinners on the houseboat or private canoe tours can also be arranged, making backwaters an ideal luxury holiday itinerary.
